What are Spelt Berries?

One of the most misnamed food ingredients that you’re likely to find, spelt berries are not infact berries of any kind at all. Rather, they are a form of grain kernel that can be used as an alternative to buckwheat or other types of grain. They are rich in different nutrients and are quite healthy when prepared in a proper way.

Spelt Berries Overview

Spelt is a type of grain plant. The berries are actually the whole kernels of the spelt seeds. Inorder to properly use these spelt berries, you’ll generally need to cook them. In most cases, when you buy spelt berries for cooking use, they’ll have already been prepared in this way and you won’t have to worry. Before cooking, spelt berries generally have a very mild flavor that might even be unnoticeable to some. After cooking, however, they adopt a nutty taste that many people find to be quite refreshing and interesting following other types of wheat and grains.

Spelt berries are excellent sources of dietary fiber and protein. In fact, a single serving of spelt berries (which amounts to about one quarter of a cup or roughly 45 grams) provides a full 6 grams of dietary fiber. This accounts for roughly one quarter of your total day’s recommended dose of dietary fiber. Generally, 45 grams of spelt berries have around 30 to 35 grams of carbohydrates in general. They also have about 5 grams of protein. This last fact makes them an excellent choice for anyone who is a vegetarian but is looking for alternative protein sources.

How to Use Spelt Berries

Before you plan to use your spelt berries, you’ll need to cook them down. This loosens up the berries and makes them more pliable for cooking purposes. Soak them for at least an hour, and preferably overnight, in a mixture of water and berries. Use about 3 parts water for every 2 parts berries (or roughly one and a half cups of water for every one cup of spelt berries). After they’ve soaked at room temperature, bring the water to a boil. You may need to add a bit more water. After a boil is achieved, put a lid on the pan that you’re using and lowe rhte heat to a simmering level. Allow the berries to simmer for about 45 minutes or until they’re tender.

At this point, you can include the spelt berries in different types of food without worrying about them being too hard to be edible.
