However, you can’t always believe what you hear and this holds true for all of the sports drinks that are currently being marketed to active individuals.
Vitamin Water is water that is available in several different fruity flavors. The product is marketed towards those living active lifestyles who are looking for the perfect post-workout drink. There are other similar products on the market that claim to be good for consuming after physical activity in order to replenish the fluids and nutrients that the body has lost during exercise.
Like regular water, Vitamin Water also does not contain any fat. Most people would consider that a healthy sports drink, but it’s also important to take a look at the ingredients that are found in Vitamin Water before you make the decision to drink it post workout. Just because a food doesn’t contain any fat doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s automatically healthy for you.
Vitamin Water Ingredients
The very first ingredient listed on the bottle itself is water, which is good because it’s supposed to be water. The problem lies in the second ingredient that immediately follows water, which is crystalline fructose or sugar. Your body needs to be hydrated, especially before, during and after a workout. Consuming sugar post-workout will actually have the opposite affect and further dehydrate the body which could be dangerous. If you were to down a whole 20-ounce bottle of Vitamin Water you would be consuming 32.5 grams of sugar–probably not what you wanted to hear if you’re a Vitamin Water fan.
The good news is that Vitamin Water does contain high amounts of vitamins B6, B12 and vitamin C. There are also 13 grams of carbohydrates per serving which is exactly what the body needs after a workout. Carbohydrates are essential post-workout because they help to refuel and energize the muscles after they have been depleted from physical activity.
Each bottle of Vitamin Water contains 2.5 servings. Unless you only plan on drinking a bit less than half the bottle you need to make sure you multiply the nutritional information by 2.5 to realize how much you’re really consuming.
Regular water really is the best way to hydrate your body at any given time, especially after a workout. While Vitamin Water does contain a good amount of carbohydrates, the sugar content is extremely high making it a fairly unhealthy drink choice. If you just worked out you probably don’t want to pour 32.5 grams of sugar down your throat. Opt for regular water instead, and if you don’t like the taste, try sweetening it with a few drops of lemon.
