With so much information currently available regarding organics, it can be difficult to determine what are facts and what is fiction. In fact, while organic foods are a great choice if you are interested in eliminating toxins from your diet, they are not necessarily essential to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Organic Foods Contain Fewer Pesticides

One of the top reasons research has found that individuals choose organic foods is due to the belief that these foods contain fewer pesticides than non-organic foods. This belief is based entirely on fact. According to the USDA, foods cannot contain labeling that claims they are organic if they have been treated with any type of antibiotic, growth hormone, pesticide, or herbicide. This is great news if you are looking to eliminate these toxins from your diet, as it proves that the organic foods you are considering are, in fact, all natural.

Organic Foods are Better for the Environment

Another issue revolves around the belief that organic foods are better for the environment. Again, this belief is based on fact. When crops are sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, the majority of the toxins will stay on the fruit. However, some will always fall onto the ground, being picked up by animals munching on grass. In addition, the toxins can sink into the ground water or wash into local streams or rivers, thus affecting fish and other creatures that depend of this water.

One of the most commonly talked about issues when it comes to organic foods is the concept that organic foods are fresher than non-organic. Unlike some of the other issues above, which can be clearly answered by a yes or no answer, this one is somewhat tricky. Packaged items, such as crackers, canned vegetables, and even cereal, are not necessarily any fresher than the non-organic alternatives. They are simply made with organic ingredients. For example, a manufacturer may use organic sodium to extend the shelf life of a particular food–all the ingredients are still organic, but it is much more stable, and therefore can last just as long as non-organic foods.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, however the answer is more obvious. Since these items are not treated with the pesticides and preservatives used to keep food looking fresh for a longer period of time, farmers provide (and grocers stock) typically only the freshest of the fresh.

Organic Foods Can Help you Lose Weight

Finally, many people believe incorrectly that organic foods can help you lose weight. This is not necessarily the case. While organic foods do not contain any added antibiotics, pesticides, or herbicides, as discussed above they can still be rich in organic butter or salt. For best results when trying to lose weight through an organic diet, be sure to stick to fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.
