The Personality Type Diet

The Personality Type Diet was developed by Robert F. Kushner, MD, a teacher of medicine at Northwestern University and director of the Wellness Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Kushner’s book, “Dr. Kushner’s Personality Type Diet,” asks readers detailed questions about their attitudes toward exercising, eating and coping with problems. Kushner’s book offers diet advice specifically designed for each personality type in the areas of eating, exercise and coping.

The Premise

The Personality Type Diet promises to help you lose weight by offering advice and tips on how to change your bad habits. The Personality Type Diet identifies the areas where you need the most help, and gives practical advice to help you eat better, exercise more and cope more effectively with problems.

The Diet

The Personality Type Diet is largely plant based and mostly vegetarian. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, beans and soy products are on the menu. Fish and poultry are allowed, and you can even have lean red meat occasionally, though you’re discouraged from consuming it more than once or twice a week.

The Personality Diet will help you plan three meals and two snacks each day. Meal plans on the Personality Diet are based on healthy, low fat and moderate fat foods. However, the Personality Diet isn’t a restrictive diet, so it allows for occasional consumption of unhealthy foods,

What to Get Excited Over

The Personality Type Diet allows you to eat a wide range of foods, and even offers appropriate recipes to help you learn healthy eating. Experts consider the Personality Type Diet to be medically sound, healthy, safe and effective. Nutritionists and medical experts consider this diet to be practical and easy for the average dieter to follow. The diet often brings about long-term weight loss.

The Personality Type Diet doesn’t ask you to eliminate unhealthy foods from the menu, but simply asks you to minimize them, so you won’t feel deprived. Kushner also operates a website, where you can use online tools to track your dieting progress, and network with other dieters for social support. The diet allows you to come up with an eating, exercise and coping plan uniquely tailored to your own needs and skills, to help change your unhealthy habits while boosting your self esteem and giving you the tools to cope with stress, boredom and emotional upset without reaching for a snack.

Things to Consider

Neither Robert F. Kushner, nor his wife and co-author, Nancy Kushner RN, MSN, are clinical psychologists, though Dr. Kushner is a well known and respected nutritionist. The Personality Type Diet is largely vegetarian, so it may not be suitable for those who like to eat a lot of meat.

The Personality Type Diet was developed by a nutritionist, and most medical experts and nutritionists agree that it is a safe and effective means to long term weight loss. If you’re ready to explore the causes of your unhealthy habits and remedy them, the Personality Type Diet may be for you.
