The Perricone Diet, created by dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD, claims that by consuming foods that decrease inflammation in your body, you can enhance your overall health and immune system, rejuvenate your skin, decelerate the aging process, and possibly even lose weight. Perricone’s plan consists of 3 meals a day—breakfast, lunch and dinner—in addition to 2 snacks, supplements, skin care products and 30 minutes of exercise. You can achieve this youthful complexion by eating “superfoods” that are loaded with omega-3s, protein and antioxidants and by shunning foods that are rich in refined carbs and sugar. Below are some snacks that are acceptable on the Perricone Diet:
1. Yogurt Parfait
You can create your own small yogurt parfait that abides by Perricone’s rules and delivers an abundance of nutrients. Start with some plain, non-fat yogurt and mix in some dry, natural oatmeal and half a handful of blueberries. Yum!
2. Turkey and Avocado Rolls
This snack is the perfect combination of protein and healthy fat. Take a few pieces of roasted deli turkey (with low sodium) and put a slice or two of avocado inside. Roll up this satisfying snack and enjoy.
3. Salmon with Olive Spread
Salmon is sure to make your skin shine, as it’s full of omega-3s and other essential nutrients. Provided you don’t eat salmon as one of your meals, enjoy a small piece as a snack. Give your fish some flavor with by topping it with an olive spread. (Yes, olives are allowed on the Perricone Diet.)
4. Fruit Salad
Fruit salad is always a refreshing snack. On the Perricone Diet enjoy a fruit salad comprised of berries, cherries, apples, pears and cantaloupe. Just be careful, as some fruits are forbidden on this eating plan, such as papaya, mangoes, grapes and watermelon. (Get an approved list before you indulge in fruit.)
5. Bean Salad
Beans are a great snack, as they’re full of fiber which will keep you full for longer. Make a bean salad using canned beans of your choice, and throw in some approved veggies such as asparagus, peppers and tomatoes. Add some spices like oregano and cayenne pepper to give your bean salad a kick.
Nuts are the ideal snack, as these little guys deliver nutrients, energy and satisfaction. However, they also pack in a lot of calories for such a small food, so make sure you consume nuts in moderation.
7. Hard Boiled Egg
This protein-filled snack will fill you up for only 70 calories. Supplement your hard boiled egg with a small green apple to satisfy your sweet tooth.
While you are enjoying snacks on the Perricone Diet, make sure you exercise portion control to keep from consuming excessive calories. Wash your snacks down with some spring water, as 8 to 10 glasses a day are required on this diet. Also, sip on some green tea, a preferred beverage that will fill you with antioxidants and energy. Most importantly, stay away from bread and other forbidden foods that can cause inflammation and lead to skin imperfections.
