The No Grain Diet

The No Grain Diet was developed by Dr. Joseph Mercola. Mercola believes that eating excessive amounts of refined sugar and carbohydrates causes the body to produce large amounts of insulin which results in hunger pangs and cravings even after you have just eaten. This repetitive cycle results in what Mercola calls the “grain addiction”.

The Premise

If you look at the American food pyramid (which is also followed by dozens of countries around the world), you will notice that the bottom and largest part of the pyramid is occupied by foods that are rich sources of carbohydrates such as rice and bread. This illustrates the problem that Dr. Mercola sees in the modern diet. Foods like  bread, pasta, cereal, rice, corn, sweets, potatoes and the like are not only a major cause of obesity, but can also result in other health disorders such as diabetes, depression, high cholesterol, allergies and even cancer. Dr. Mercola believes that a diet low in carbohydrates will not only help you lose weight but can also improve your overall health.

The Diet

The No Grain diet consists of three phases. The first phase, also known as the “start-up phase”, lasts for three days in which you need to eliminate all carbohydrates from your diet. This means refraining from bread, potatoes, rice, sweets and even fruits and vegetables that contain high amounts of starch. During this phase, it’s also important that you eat frequently, as often as every two hours.

During the second phase, you continue to cut out carbohydrates from your diet but your meals take on a more definite structure. Instead of eating every couple of hours, you will now eat three meals and three snacks daily. This is also known as the “stabilize phase”. Exercising five days a week is also recommended during this phase. This phase is continued until you finally reach your goal weight.

The “sustain phase” is the last phase of the No Grain diet. During this stage, you can gradually put carbohydrates back into your diet. However, it’s important that you keep track of your weight so you can know which carbs cause you to gain weight.

If you are looking for a diet that can give you fast results then the No Grain diet is certainly something that you should try. The diet also addresses other aspects of health aside from weight. It offers tools that will help you deal with emotional and psychological factors involved in cravings and weight loss.

Things to Consider

If you are a vegetarian or someone who is used to eating starch with meals then the No Grain diet may be quite challenging for you. You may also find the diet time consuming since you need to prepare plenty of recommended snacks and meals. Organic foods under the diet may also add to your expenses.

The Verdict

The No Grain diet is very restrictive, costly and time consuming. Although it produces good and immediate results, you might want to look elsewhere if you are looking for convenient diets. However, if you are dealing with other health conditions like diabetic symptoms or sensitivity to carbs then this diet can vastly improve your health while helping you lose weight.
