The Karl Lagerfeld Diet

The Karl Lagerfeld Diet was created by Dr. Jean Claude Houdret after a patient (Karl Lagerfeld) had difficulties losing weight. Dr. Houdret specializes in nutrition and weight loss. This diet led to a 92-pound weight loss by Karl Lagerfeld over the course of one year.

The Premise

Unlike many other diets on the market, the Karl Lagerfeld Diet addresses eating, psychological and behavioral issues that cause obesity. This diet is designed to help individuals learn the mental reasons behind their extra weight and learn how to overcome personal issues that are preventing weight loss.

The Diet

The basic principle behind the Karl Lagerfeld Diet is to eat a low fat, low calorie diet that does not include refined carbohydrates or fried foods. Fats and simple carbohydrates are severely limited on this diet.

This diet focuses on eating lean proteins and fresh vegetables. Dr. Houdret recommends that dieters eat a serving of lean protein at every meal to help avoid the loss of muscle mass while following a low calorie diet. The Karl Lagerfeld Diet has three separate phases.

The first phase has individuals eating between 800 to 900 calories per day. This phase lasts for two weeks, and Dr. Houdret stresses that individuals should be under medical supervision when on this lower calorie phase. During phase one, dieters are allowed three meals a day that include protein powders and vegetables.

The second phase of the Karl Lagerfeld Diet allows for dieters to eat 1,000 to 1,200 calories per day. For dinner, dieters are allowed to substitute fish, chicken or lean beef for the protein powder. At the end of each meal, dieters are to eat a serving of low fat, high calcium dairy, such as a cheese stick or a cup of fat free yogurt.

The final phase could be considered the maintenance plan of the Karl Lagerfeld Diet. During this phase, dieters eat between 1,200 and 1,600 calories per day. During this phase, dieters are allowed to have fruit with dinner and a serving of whole wheat bread with breakfast.

By following a diet that is this low in calories, most individuals should experience weight loss. Focusing on slow and steady weight loss is a healthy way for people to lose weight.

Things to Consider

The Karl Lagerfeld Diet consists heavily on dietary supplements, specifically protein powders.  These supplements, which come in a range of flavors, can be expensive and they may not be filling for some dieters.

The initial phases of the Karl Lagerfeld Diet is extremely low in calories. The Mayo Clinic recommends a healthy low calorie diet as one that is between 1,200 and 1,500 calories. Scientific research has proven the necessity of healthy fats in one’s diet. This diet is very low in fat, which may cause individuals to be malnourished in omega-3s, polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats.


Not recommended. The Karl Lagerfeld Diet is extreme and fails to promote a balanced diet and routine exercise plan. This diet stresses hunger and deprivation as key aspects of losing weight, which according to researchers this is not mandatory to have effective weight loss.
