Stevia vs. Splenda: Which Is Best?

Stevia, a naturally created plant based sugar, differs greatly from the sucralose, commonly referred to by the brand name Splenda. Realistically, neither of the two will greatly hinder your health when consumed in moderate or recommended amounts.

General Information

This sugar substitute comes from the plant, stevia. The actual sweet derivative from the stevia leaves, named rebaudioside A, offers a taste at least 200 times sweeter than conventional table sugar varieties. Stevia does serve as a natural sugar substitute; however it does not impact insulin secretion. This often causes individuals to seek other sugar substitute options.

When the body does not secrete insulin, hunger and appetite regulation do not occur either. This phenomenon often gets labeled as the consumption of empty calories. Only two brands of stevia were deemed approvable by the Food and Drug Administration after much vigorous debate.

Like stevia, Splenda or sucralose does not cause the secretion of insulin either. You will notice, however, that Splenda has received the approval of the Food and Drug Administration as a food additive. This sugar substitute provides a taste about 550 to 600 times as sweet as granulated table sugars.

Choosing Stevia or Splenda

Based on the Food and Drug Administration decisions, Splenda remains safer in comparison to stevia. After multiple tests and research projects, the FDA decided that humans have the ability to safely consume 5 gm of sucralose per each kilogram of body weight per day without seeing negative health effects.

Stevia continues to receive speculation, though positive research and testing results largely contributed to the FDA approval of two soft drink brands that use the sweetener as a sugar substitute (during the year of 2008).

Neither of the two sugar substitutes has proven to negatively affect human health through long term consumption. Actually, some tests done with stevia have shown positive health benefits. The World Health Organization, also known as the WHO, have concluded that stevia shows some links in reducing blood pressure and even the risk of diabetes.

The group did say that more tests were required in order to provide conclusive evidence, however the WHO was certain that the tests done in 2006 proved that stevia does not cause any sort of toxic release in the body that potentially causes cancers.

The Better Choice

Since stevia has not completely received clearance by the Food and Drug Administration and because the sweetener does not cause insulin release in the body, Splenda serves as the better choice for alternative sweetening purposes. However, Splenda does have restrictions regarding the amounts of healthy consumption levels. As stated above, you need to follow the Food and Drug Administration’s daily intake recommendations in order to completely remain safe from any underlying side effects.

The heat tolerance level stands as another benefit to count in favor of sucralose or Splenda. Several consumers use the sugar substitute in baking dishes and desserts. The product gets bought and sold at stores in a powder form which easily mixes with liquids as well. Several people use the sweetener in coffees and teas, plus numerous other foods and drinks.
