Sea Salt vs. Iodized Salt

Salt is a favorite seasoning for many different types of foods, but is there really a difference between sea salt and iodized salt? The human body requires a certain amount of salt intake to remain healthy. Sea salt and iodized salt have some fundamental differences that make them unique and leave consumers wondering what kind of salt has the best impact on health. Sea Salt

Sea salt comes from where its name suggests, right out of the ocean. When seawater evaporates, it leaves behind salt. Some other trace minerals are also left behind when the water melts. The exact types of minerals vary depending on ocean conditions and the region of the world the sea salt comes from. While the minerals have little to no nutritional value, they cause sea salt to have a very distinct flavor and sometimes a variety of colors. Sea salt undergoes minimal processing before it hits the shelves for consumers to buy. It is manufactured in different degrees of coarseness. 

Iodized Salt

Iodized salt, also known as table salt, is extracted through a mining process. Mines are set up over large, underground deposits of salt. After the salt is removed from the mine, it goes into a refining process that is designed to remove virtually all trace minerals. In addition to the removal of trace minerals during the refining process, an additive that interferes with clumping is typically placed in the salt. Finally, iodized salt gets its name from the common practice of adding iodine to the salt. Iodine is an essential nutrient that the body can use. 

Which Salt is Better?

The processes of acquiring sea salt and iodized salt are quite different, but their chemical construct is essentially the same. Both iodized salt and sea salt are both made up of two core ingredients: sodium and chloride. The body is capable of using sodium chloride just as effectively whether it comes from table salt or iodized salt. It is clear that sea salt and table salt are essentially chemically the same. The real difference between the two has to do with the texture of the salt and how it tastes to a consumer. Sea salt is known to have a coarse texture, while iodized salt is very fine. The two salts also taste different and appeal to the taste buds of different consumers.

No matter what your taste buds prefer, the key thing to remember when it comes to salt is moderation. It is important to limit salt intake, as it can be especially harmful to individuals with high blood pressure and those who are approaching the middle age years of life. The body only requires a few hundred milligrams per day to maintain a sense of health and wellness. Anything more than that can increase risk for a variety of health problems.
