Overweight and Smoking? 3 Heart Risks

Smoking causes heart disease and many other health symptoms. Obesity is also another common reason for various health problems. If you smoke and are overweight, then you will be at a greater risk due to the combined effects. Your heart is the most important muscle in your body. This starts beating before you are even born and won’t stop for a rest until you die. It’s a truly remarkable organ and certainly deserves to be cared for.

Obesity is becoming more common every year. If you are overweight, then this will put lots of extra stress on your heart. Your heart is a pump which needs to pump blood all around your body so that it can circulate everywhere. The fatter you are, the harder it has to pump. To be clinically obese you need to have a Body Mass Index of 30 or higher. A BMI of between 25 and 29.9 is considered as being overweight. To work out your BMI, divide your weight in kilograms by the square root of your height in meters. Then multiply the result by 703. Obesity is a major problem affecting society. Over 60% of Americans are overweight and 30% of these are obese.

Smoking is also a major health risk. This also increases the risk of heart attacks and disease. Smoking will cause many toxins to build up inside your body. This will narrow the arteries which will increase blood pressure. It’s also more likely for blood clots to form and be life threatening. The more often you smoke, the higher the risk of you developing heart disease in the future. If you give up smoking, then you will be able to reduce your risk. Here are three risks of smoking and obesity:

1. Heart Disease

If you are obese or overweight, then this will put you at greater risk of heart attacks and heart disease. This is due to high cholesterol, high blood pressure and increased triglyceride levels. Obesity can also lead to diabetes, which increases the risks of heart disease.

2. Blood Clots

If you get a cut, then your blood should clot to prevent more blood being lost. However, if there are any clots inside of your body, they can be very dangerous. Smoking greatly increases the chances of blood clotting inside the veins. If this clot travels to the lungs, then it can cause a pulmonary embolism which is potentially fatal. Anyone who smokes over 25 cigarettes per day is about 50% more likely to suffer blood clots than a non-smoker.

3. Blood Pressure

Both smoking and being obese will affect your blood pressure. Cholesterol and plaque will stick to the sides of arteries making them narrower. Narrow arteries and veins will increase your blood pressure.

Many people started smoking quite early on in their life. This makes giving up very difficult. The only thing you really need to kick the habit and improve your life is willpower and patience.

The easiest thing to do though is not to start smoking in the first place. Any parents of teenagers should try to inform them why it is so bad for them. Being overweight can cause harm to your body and heart. To lose weight, you should eat healthily and get regular exercise.
