On a Diet? 6 Dessert Choices

Diet dessert options don’t have to be unappetizing. Here are some healthy, low fat or fat free dessert choices for those who are trying to drop a few pounds.

1) Low Fat Yogurt

Low fat or nonfat yogurt can be a delicious substitute for ice cream. It can also be used to replace whipped toppings and cream in many dessert recipes. Greek yogurt is packaged with the liquids removed, so it’s got a richer, creamier, smoother texture. If you don’t like plain yogurt, try vanilla flavor. You can mix honey, fruit or dark chocolate chips into your yogurt for an extra sweet flavor. Herbs like mint and cinnamon can add endless variety to this dish.

Low fat and nonfat yogurts aren’t just low in calories. They’re also high in calcium, vitamin D and protein, which will keep your bones and muscles strong. The live bacterial cultures in yogurt help your digestive process and keep your intestinal tract healthy.

2) Grilled Fruit

Many fruits, including bananas, pineapples, peaches and nectarines, are tasty when grilled. You can grill fruit on a hibachi or, if you don’t have one, you can caramelize it in a skillet to the same effect. Slice your fruit and coat it thinly in brown sugar. Place the sliced, sugared fruit into a hot skillet. Fry each side for two to five minutes.

Serve caramelized fruit with low fat or nonfat frozen yogurt, or with nonfat Greek yogurt for a tasty, healthy dessert that’s rich in vitamins, minerals and protein. It’s also low in calories.

3) Fruit Smoothies

Fruit smoothies that are made with low fat or non fat yogurt can be a dessert or a snack in themselves. Simply blend your favorite fruit and nonfat yogurt together. Use frozen yogurt for milkshake-like results.

4) Dark Chocolate Strawberries

Dark chocolate has a number of health benefits. It’s rich in antioxidants, which slow the signs of aging and may help prevent cancer. Dark chocolate promotes heart health by preventing aterial plaque and regulating blood pressure. It also stimulates your brain to produce serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of well being.

Strawberries dipped in dark chocolate are a delicious and healthy way to get your antioxidants and other vitamins as well. Wash and hull strawberries before dipping them in melted dark chocolate. Lay them out on wax paper to harden.

5) Frozen Yogurt Parfaits

Use nonfat vanilla frozen yogurt and fruit of your choice to make layered parfaits in dessert cups. Top your parfait with crystallized ginger, melted dark chocolate, shredded coconut or slivered almonds.

6) Angel Food Cake

Prepared angel food cakes are available in most supermarkets and they’re very low in calories. For a quick and easy low calorie dessert, top a slice of angel food cake with berries and low fat whipped topping. Sprinkle sugar free, fat free chocolate or fruit syrup to finish. You can also garnish your angel food cake with dark chocolate chips, shredded coconut, crushed peanuts or slivered almonds.
