How to Use Grapefruit in Your Diet

Rather than planning ways that you can incorporate grapefruit into your diet, perhaps you are interested in learning some fast and easy solutions to consume more of this healthy fruit.

  • Purchase several grapefruit at once and after peeling, wedge the fruit from the skin. Place into a storage container and seal. Each morning when you wake up, eat several wedges with your breakfast. This makes preparation simple.
  • Place grapefruit pieces into sandwich bags to easily transport a healthy snack during the day while at work or school.
  • If you prefer drinking juice over eating fruit, invest in a quality juicer. It might take several grapefruits to produce a satisfying glass of grapefruit juice. To reduce preparation time, squeeze the juice from several grapefruits at one time and store in a pitcher in the refrigerator.

Simple Fruit Salad

A simple, yet delicious way to incorporate grapefruit into your diet is by adding it to a fruit salad with other fruits. Squeeze 1-2 fresh red grapefruits to get 2/3 cup of fresh grapefruit juice. In a blender add the grapefruit juice, 4 fresh strawberries, 1 medium sized banana, 8 ounces of strawberry banana or vanilla flavored yogurt, 1 Tblsp of honey and 1/2 cup crushed ice. Blend until smooth.

Avocado Grapefruit Salad

The health benefits of avocados combined with grapefruit are ideal in this easy-to-prepare recipe. For this recipe, you will need:

  • 1/4 sliced cucumbers
  • 2 Tblsp sliced red onion
  • 1/4 sectioned grapefruit, juice reserved and set aside
  • 1/2 ripe avocado, sliced
  • 3/4 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp honey
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 Romaine lettuce leaves

Combine cucumbers and onions in a small bowl. Mix together 3 Tblsp grapefruit juice with olive oil, honey and salt. Add to the cucumber mixture. Toss in grapefruit sections and sliced avocados, mixing gently to coat with the sauce. Place the avocado and grapefruit mixture over the Romaine lettuce leaves. Serve immediately.
