If sports or exercising is a significant part of your everyday life, then a sports injury can certainly disrupt your routine. When you find yourself gaining weight due to your condition, the injury also ends up negatively affecting your emotional health. If you have recently suffered from a sports injury, there are some things that you can do to prevent weight gain while you’re recovering.

Stay off the Couch

Having a sports injury can easily become the perfect excuse for you to become a couch potato. After all, your sports injury prevents you from doing your usual workout. You have probably also been advised to get plenty of rest to speed up your recovery. Before you know it, you’re spending most of your time in front of the tube, munching on your favorite snacks. Just because a sports injury keeps you from doing your usual physical activities does not mean that you should become sedentary. Research has shown that people who lead a couch potato lifestyle are much more likely to gain weight than people who only watch TV for short periods of time. If you want to prevent weight gain after a sports injury, staying off the couch is the first thing you should do.

Do Low Impact Exercises

Just because you have a sports injury doesn’t mean that you are not allowed to do any form of exercise. These exercises won’t put as much strain on your body as regular exercises. Low impact exercises are usually recommended for elderly people, pregnant women, overweight individuals and people who are suffering from chronic pain. Low impact workouts are also common among sports injury patients. One type of low impact exercise that you might enjoy is water jogging. Water jogging is usually done in a pool with waist-deep water. If you want more flexibility, you can also use flotation devices and flotation shoes. Even though working out in the water will prevent you from sweating, it’s still important that you stay hydrated, so be sure to drink plenty of water. Other low impact exercises that you can try are Pilates and yoga.

Watch What You Eat

Another common cause of weight gain among sports injury patients is emotional eating and overeating, so make sure that you watch what you eat. A sports injury can cause negative feelings such as boredom, depression and stress. These emotions can drive you to eat in order to feel better. Emotional eating may cause you to reach for unhealthy and fattening foods. It will also cause you to eat more than you should. Instead of giving in to temptation, use the time of your recovery to learn how you can make your diet healthier.

Make sure that your diet has plenty of protein, since this is essential for injury recovery. Lean meats and nuts are all great sources of protein. Try to avoid fatty foods like pastries, candy, fast food, chips and other processed snacks. You can also break up your meals into as many as six small meals a day to prevent hunger pangs.
