How to Manage Weight While on Birth Control

If you are hesitant to go on birth control because you fear it will wreak havoc on your wasit line; have no fear! The notion that you’ll gain weight from birth control is simply a myth, and only a few women actually pack on pounds from the pill or another form of birth control. And the ones who do, only gain a few pounds due to water retention, as a result of the increased estrogen levels in their body. If you are one of these people, or if you fear you will gain weight by going on birth control, then follow these tips to keep your body in peak shape:

Develop the Right Attitude

In order to keep from gaining weight while on birth control, you must keep a positive state of mind. If you convince yourself you’re going to gain weight from oral contraceptives, you can unintentionally skew your diet efforts. It’s amazing how much control your mind has over your body. Don’t assume that your appetite is going to increase because you’re on the pill, and remain determined to keep extra pounds away while on birth control.

Drink Lots of Water

To keep from retaining water, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to flush out any excessive bloat. It would be wise to keep a water bottle with you to sip on, to ensure you’re taking in the amount you need. If water bores you, dress it up with a slice of lemon or lime. Make water, or natural iced tea, your beverage of choice when dining out. Steer clear of all sodas, as even the diet ones can add unnecessary sodium to your meal, causing further bloat. Also, try to avoid eating excessively salty foods, as these can also instigate a bloated feeling.

Keep Moving

Exercise and constant movement are essential anytime you want to lose weight, or simply keep it from creeping up on you. If you keep active throughout the day, weight gain will not plague you while on birth control. Strive to work out 4 to 5 days a week, and be sure to include both cardio and strength training in your fitness regimen. Also, try to fit in some extra steps wherever possible. Find simple ways to incorporate movement into your day such as taking the stairs, parking far from the grocery store, walking to lunch or simply taking a walking break in the late afternoon.

Eat Healthy

If you do not consume a healthy diet and limit your portions, you’re going to gain weight…regardless if you’re on birth control or not. Therefore, always follow a nutritious eating regimen that includes whole grains, lean protein, low fat dairy, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Do not let your mind convince you that you’re hungrier, or need extra calories, because you’re on birth control.

If weight loss is your goal, then remember you will gain more weight by becoming pregnant than by using birth control. Therefore, if you’re not looking to have a baby anytime soon, do not let your fear of gaining weight keep you from going on the pill!
