How to Make an Avocado Hair Treatment

Avocados are part of the new craze in health food, but their benefits are not limited to merely healthy eating alone. Homemade cures and beauty products that are made from avocados are becoming increasingly popular and cheap to create. Here is a way to make an avocado hair treatment and to enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.

There are two main recipes for an avocado hair treatment. The first and easier recipe calls for a ripe avocado and a cup of mayonnaise. The other requires a ripe avocado, two tablespoons of plain, unsweetened yogurt, an egg, a tablespoon of jojoba oil and half a teaspoon of rosemary oil. The best results come about when using organic or all-natural ingredients, and there should be no added sugars, salt or preservatives in the ingredients. All the ingredients are also easily available from the health food shop, but with the proliferation of organic products in today’s supermarkets, they can also be widely found in most of the major supermarkets. Another thing to note is that ripe avocados should be chosen, so when picking the fruit, gently press the top of the fruit, and those that feel soft are ripe and ready.

A blender is preferred in the making of a hair mask, and this is in order to ensure that all the ingredients are evenly distributed and there are no lumps in the mask. A smooth mixture is required for the best results. If you do not have a blender, place all the ingredients in a glass mixing bowl and mash well with fork, or use a potato ricer to mash and mix everything up into a smooth paste. To prevent making a mess with the paste, it may be a good idea to wrap a towel around your shoulders to prevent staining on the clothes. Start with a small, palm sized ball of the mixture and begin massaging it into the roots of the hair. Work slowly onto the nape of the neck and cover the ends of the hair, then pile the hair onto the top of the head. If you have longer hair, do this with the help of a large clip. Wrap the hair with cling film or a plastic shower cap, then leave it for 20 minutes to half an hour. Following this, wash the mixture off the hair with shampoo and conditioner.

The benefits of the avocado hair treatment are the most evident in hair types that are dry and brittle. Since avocados contain natural oils and fatty acids, the fruit serves as a natural conditioner. The hair treatment restores the moisture to the hair, giving dry hair a new life. In addition, since the treatment is entirely natural, it prevents any chemical products from damaging the hair further. For the best results, use the treatment about once a month, or twice a month in drier climates or harsh sunlight.
