While tap dance is often seen as a great art form, it is not always considered an effective weight loss tool. However, when done properly, tap dancing can actually help you lose a lot of weight! For optimal results, be sure to set both short term and long term goals for yourself, and reward yourself when you achieve these goals.
Set a Goal for Yourself
Once you have decided that you want to lose weight with tap dancing, it is very important that you set a goal for yourself regarding how much weight you would like to ultimately lose, and in what amount of time. Research has found that simply saying that you want to lose weight is not as effective as creating a specific goal for yourself.
For best results, come up a with long term goal and several short term goals. For example, you may say that you want to lose 50 pounds in a year. Since this is a relatively high amount of weight, break it up into shorter goals. Start by saying that you want to lose five pounds in the first month. And when you do reach this goal, be sure to reward yourself for your good behavior!
Learn How to Tap Dance
Now that you have created your goals, it is essential that you learn how to properly tap dance. Even if you feel that you are an experienced dancer, it always helps to get a little bit of instruction every now and then. If you are just learning how to tap dance, talk with friends, family members and fellow tap dancers. Tell them you are looking for a good instructor. Chances are, they will be able to refer you to someone with lots of experience who will be able to teach you the basics.
Tap Dance on a Regular Basis
Once you feel you have a basic grasp of the fundamentals of tap, it is important to actually dance in order to achieve your goals! For best results, try to do a little bit of dancing each day. This doesn’t mean you need to go all out, but if you can get in at least 30 minutes most days a week, your caloric burn will go up dramatically, resulting in greater weight loss results.
Count Your Calories
Finally, be sure to track your calories. In one pound, there is 3500 calories. Therefore, if your short term goal is to lose one pound of weight in a week, you must cut 700 calories from your diet. Typically, tap dancing for one hour (or performing another activity of a similar degree of intensity) will result in a calorie burn of approximately 600 calories. This means that you must cut an additional 100 calories from your diet either in the form or food or increased exercise. Research has found that typically, people achieve the best results when they pair exercise and diet together to achieve weight loss.
