If you’ve recently undergone menopause and you find yourself having difficulty losing weight, then you are one of the many women around the world looking for an effective post-menopause weight loss plan. First of all, it’s important for you to understand that it’s quite normal and common to gain extra pounds if you’re a woman around or above 50. Foods that you used to eat in your younger years without worrying about gaining weight are probably the same foods that you need to avoid today to maintain your figure.

Even if you are one of the lucky ones who don’t dramatically gain weight after menopause, you will still have a hard time maintaining your weight. Going through menopause doesn’t mean you have to give up the battle against the bulge. Here are some ways that you can lose weight after menopause.

Cut Back on the Calories

If you want to lose weight or even just maintain your current weight after menopause, one of the first things you need to do is decrease the amount of calories you consume. In fact, even consuming the same amount of calories that you consumed before menopause would already be considered overeating. This is because women tend to require less calories as they grow older; you can even cut as much as 15% of the calories if you are post-menopausal. This doesn’t mean that you have to start counting calories to make sure you are not overeating. All you have to do is refrain from fatty foods, refined sugars and carbs. Instead, munch on more fruits and vegetables. 

Start Getting Active

Lots of young women can get away with not exercising and still manage to look good in skinny jeans or tight dresses. However, as you get older and go through menopause, the effects of a sedentary lifestyle can start showing up on your figure. Getting active doesn’t mean that you have to sign up for a membership at the gym. There are many physical activities that can help you lose weight and enjoy at the same time. For instance, why not invite a friend to walk with you for a half hour everyday? If you love swimming, why not hit the community pool several times a week to do some laps? You can also invest in a bicycle and go riding with your friends and family. Other fun activities that can help you keep those pounds at bay are dancing, yoga and running. 

Improve Your Metabolism

One of the major reasons why women gain weight after menopause is because their body’s metabolism tends to slow down as they age. Therefore, it makes senses to say that if you wish to lose weight, then you will have to give your metabolism a boost. You can do this by eating a well-balanced breakfast, eating small and frequent portions of food instead of three large meals, getting enough sleep and doing sufficient cardiovascular exercises every day.

Reward Yourself Smartly

Now that your kids are all grown up and you don’t have to work as hard as you used to, it’s the perfect time to sit back and just enjoy life. Stress and hot flashes during menopause can leave you feeling tired, tempting you to reward yourself with a big slice of chocolate cake or a tub of ice cream. Instead, go for reward that won’t make you gain weight. Treat yourself and a close friend to a day at the spa or enjoy a simple bubble bath at home.
