Leafy greens are edible leaves that are classified as vegetables. Some have a bitter taste which is why they usually are not a favorite on most menus. However, they are highly nutritious and can even help you to fight cancer.

What is Cancer?

Cancer occurs when cells in the body begin to divide and attack the body. Some cancers will spread to other parts of the body, while other cancers do not spread. Cancer is a life threatening disease that you want to avoid at all costs. It not only will affect your body, but the seriousness of it can also affect your mind and emotions. One of the best ways to fight cancer before it even starts is to eat lots of leafy greens.

Leafy greens are high in fiber which is essential for the digestive system, as it helps to keep the stomach, small intestines and colon clean so that harmful toxins cannot build up anywhere in your digestive tract. This will not only help to fight colon cancer, but it will also strengthen the immune system, as about 80 percent of it is situated in the digestive tract. Studies show that cancer cells cannot form in the body if you have a strong immune system that is not burdened with any toxins.

Leafy greens are a good source of calcium, which is able to help you fight breast and colon cancers. Leafy greens are also an excellent source of vitamin A. Studies have shown that vitamin A helps to shield your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. This in turn can help to prevent you from getting skin cancer. Studies show that when B vitamins are combined with methionine, which is an amino acid, that it can lower your risk of lung cancer. You can obtain B vitamins from leafy greens, and methionine can be obtained in high doses from Brazil nuts, and in low doses from leafy greens.

Folate is a B vitamin that will help you to fight against colon, lung, cervix and breast cancer. However, you should avoid consuming too much folate as this can actually promote the growth of cancerous tumors. But don’t let this scare you away from leafy greens, as an overdose usually only occurs if you are taking folate supplements. All foods are good in moderation, and leafy greens can supply you with enough folate to eliminate the need for supplements.
