How is Fatigue Related to Heart Rate?

Have you ever felt tired after walking your dog or does a little physical activity makes you want to rest before doing anything else? This could be because of an irregular heart rate. Fatigue, as most of us attribute our tiredness and lethargy to, is directly related to the rate at which our heart beats.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, about 4 million Americans suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), a condition that cripples the normal functioning of their lives. Its symptoms include fatigue that has been there for more than six months, tiredness after doing physical activities, fatigue after sleep, short-term memory problems, muscle aches and depression.

What Is Fatigue?

How is fatigue related to a person’s heart rate? A normal heart rate is calculated as beats per minute. It can vary with the body’s need for oxygen. An athlete’s heart rate, while exercising, is much more than a regular person’s. Now, when the heart is unable to pump as much as the body requires, blood flow to the muscles and other organs does not suffice. This causes fatigue and tiredness. When slight fatigue is untreated, the root cause unknown or ignored, it usually leads to more serious problems including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Depressed heart rates should not be ignored. Your body is unable to supply as much energy as you require and you end up feeling tired or ‘run down’ most of the time. Athletes sometimes face what is called ‘Overtraining Syndrome,’ a problem where their body is unable to keep pace with the strenuous workouts or energy needed, leading to several other problems. Fatigue is the most common symptom.

Change the Way You Live

For those who can identify with these symptoms, there’s no need to worry. Fatigue can be treated. There are ways to change your heart rate.

  • Plan your activities. Ensure that you do not have too many things planned for the same day. Give your body time to rest. Let the heart pump efficiently. However, make sure that your day is not spent on the couch. Lethargy also contributes to fatigue and weak muscles.
  • Focus on nutrition. Give your body the proteins and carbohydrates it needs to enable a steady heart rate.
  • Drink lots of water. When the body lacks enough water, the heart has a tougher time pumping blood. Dehydration is another cause of fatigue.

Fitness is extremely important for a proper heart rate. Strenuous workouts and trips to the gym don’t imply that you are fit. It is a change in lifestyle and habits that will make you feel better. The better your heart beats, the healthier you are and the happier your life is.
