Healthy Snacks for Diabetics

Diabetics have a constant struggle to maintain their blood sugars and they do this by eating a healthy diet and healthy snacks.  Snacks are vital between meals because they help to keep the blood glucose levels at or near normal levels. Snacks also help to keep the blood sugar where it needs to be to prevent low blood sugar or hypoglycemia.


Nuts of all kinds make a great snack because they are high in fiber.  Fiber works to help stabilize blood sugar levels.  This will help in keeping the health of any diabetic where it needs to be.  Besides being full of fiber, nuts are filling and will tide anyone over until the next meal. Contained within the nuts are healthy fats that help to lower cholesterol and reduce the chances of heart disease. While most nuts have healthy benefits, pistachios and walnuts are the two that are the best for diabetics.  Eating nuts in a plain form is the best option and eating them in small portions is recommended.


Vegetables are a great snack for anyone, diabetics included. Vegetables in their raw form are the best way to eat them because in that form is when they contain the most nutrients. Vegetables help to lower the risk for heart disease and they are high in antioxidants. These antioxidants protect the body from heart disease, stroke and hypertension. To mix raw vegetables up a bit, they can be dipped into various salad dressing, cheeses or hummus. Be careful when choosing dips because some can be high in fat and calories.


Fruits are a flavorful and healthy choice in snacks. Mangos, bananas, apples and oranges have a high fiber content and a low sugar content.  Avocados are high in fiber as well, but they do have a high calorie count.  For a snack, fruit is easy to consume as some are ready to go. The ones that are not will take only a few minutes to cut up and prepare to be eaten. Smoothies are a good way to get a few different fruits in a tasty and healthy way.

Crackers and Chips

Another option to look into for a fiber filled snacks is chips and crackers. Be sure to check labels though, as there are many out there that are completely unhealthy.  Anything baked is a good start as well as low-fat and low-calorie. Many of these crackers can be paired with squares of cheese to add a bit of calcium. Sandwich crackers and saltines can be eaten with peanut butter.  The majority of chips are full of fat and grease so an all-natural chip is a good option. Baked chips are starting to become more popular. As with any snack, crackers and chips need to be eaten in moderation.

Diabetics have a daily struggle to keep their blood sugar where it needs to be. Snacks throughout the day between meals will help to keep the blood sugar at a normal level. Diabetics need to have a diet that is high in fiber and low in fat and their snacks should follow along those same lines.
