At home support Oct 26-Nov 1 Getting Past those treaters

Well I thought I would start this weeks thread with a thought...How are we going to sneak past those trick or treat candies?

I am still putting off even buying any yet for the short little monsters who visit each year hoping the less time I have candy in the house the less time I will have to say to myself..its only 'one' piece--over and over again LOL

Now that it is getting closer and closer to the holidays I am finding I am looking for more ww recipes to use for my cooking. I did find one for stuffing I need to test drive using ff crackers and an apple. Anyone try that one yet? I know the turkey will not be a problem, hmm mashed potato's and gravey well my thoughts on that was omit it from the table and substitute with steamed veggies? appitizers well looking for suggestions. I know if I fill the table with the great tastes from ww recipes the rest of the family will eat it and I won't have to worry about each mouthful I chew. Being on the wendie plan too I will move my SHP day to thurs instead of wed

Looking forward to all the ideas us smart chickies have

Hiya,

My Thanksgiving plan is just to eat on plan the whole week -- and use my 35 flex points on thanksgiving day. Is it a great plan? Nope. But I only get to see my family about twice a year (Thanksgiving and Christmas), so I'm not going to feel guilty about indulging myself those two days. Just gotta be good the other 363 days of the year!!!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

texscrapper 10-27-2008 07:52 AM

How about buying Halloween candy that you don't like for the Trick or Treaters? I can always stay away from hard candies, dum dums, etc. Or hand out the mini Play Dough containers this year. Target has a big "trick or treat" bag of them. You could also hand out Halloween Goldfish - they come in individual "Halowee" serving bags as well!

As for Thanksgiving, I'm not planning to do much differently. We always go to DH's aunts house - I will probably bring a fruit and veggie tray. There will be turkey, salad, and a few other veggies I'll eat. I AM planning of getting a massive amount of exercise on Black Friday when I am going to SHOP TIL I DROP!

Nancy - I found a mashed potato recipe in a magazine I subscribe to called "Diet & Nutrition" I will dig it out for you and post it here! It gave all of the nutrition info, so you could easily convert the points.

sxulcmnky 10-27-2008 10:00 AM

hey guys! just doing a mini-check in... as of last weeks weigh in i've lost 7.4#'s. I'm on week 4 started yesterday... i do my weigh ins on tuesday's though, so i will find out this week's loss tomorrow

my problem is going to not be staying away from the candy, but rather from the booze when i go out with a friend on halloween night lol

nancylmrn 10-27-2008 03:56 PM

Zata sounds like you got a working plan for the holiday and what a great way to use those flex points LOL

texs yes please do dig out that mashed potato info I can use all the ammonition I can get. And I am going to make a trip to Target and look for the mini playdoughs that would solve all my problems. OOOH black friday wonder if I can get brave and head out for a little/much needed shopping excurtion? wouldn't it be great to say I need to buy a smaller size jeans at that very same time????

sxu--well the booze is a major problem with me too...well mostly wine but I have found these past few weeks since I am doing the wendie plan I can plan for that day of splurge. Just remember your body processes those calories differently. It will burn them off before it ever touches any fat cells (at least that is what I have read)

cher37 10-27-2008 05:12 PM

We normally buy the Halloween candy that night... and... it's always on sale! But since we now live on the end of a street where there are no little one's, we don't have to buy candy this year!!!

spryng 10-27-2008 05:17 PM

Afternoon all! :)

Nancy, I'm not a big candy eater, I'd rather have chocolate icecream and brownies so halloween isn't much for me. I may have a dark chocolate or two but friday my flex resets so I'll have flex to use if I need them :) And about thanksgiving, I'm giving myself that day off. One day off plan won't wreck my weightloss and if I try to deprive myself or eat less on that day it will lead to a total binge so I just know to workout more that week and go low on pts before hand and I'll do ok :)

Sally, congrats on the 7 lbs gone!! that is awesome! :) Yeah alcohol could do me in too, I've actually not touched a drop since starting ww this time, I just don't want to waste the pts, lol

Texas, I'm with you, we always hit Black Friday so that should help burn off some stuffing, lol!

Zeta I agree with you about those two days, we don't actually do a big meal for xmas so I'm not worried about it but thanksgiving is our huge meal of the year and I'm so ready for it :) I'm hoping to be down a size by then too :)

Well my day has been good. I forgot to take anything out for dinner tonight so I think I'll heat up chicken and such for the kids and I may just have some potstickers. Something quick and easy and low in pts for me :)

texscrapper 10-27-2008 06:40 PM

Nancy - Well, I dug out the magazine and it wasn't exectly a recipe, just more like tips for mashed potatoes Here's what it said:
"Using chicken broth instead of butter will lighten up the texture of mashed potatoes and make them look and taste fluffier as opposed to oily or heavy. Using broth instead of butter also eliminates most of the fat from the mashed potatoes. For a creamier texture, add a little fat free half and half or fat free buttermilk."

So I was doing the points on this and it looks like 1 c cooked potatoes is 2 pts, broth is free, and full fat half and half is 1 pt/2 T - so you're looking at a max of 3 pts per cup of potatoes - that is doable!

sxulcmnky - WTG on the loss!

Spryng - Are you making homemade potstickers? If so ,please share the recipe!

ZetaMD2Be 10-27-2008 08:56 PM

Hiya Ladies,

Just checking in for the day! I'm having a hard time getting all 27 of my points in -- but I think it's just because I'm not planning well enough. I got in 24 yesterday and I'll probably get in about the same today. I tried to supplement with skim milk and other healthier type options to make up the difference, but I just wasn't hungry! My biggest problem has always been a lack of eating enough meals -- I usually only eat twice a day. So now I'm trying to transition into eating more often with smaller meals and snacks.

So the goal for this week: To eat 3 meals a day with at least 2 snacks.

On the bright side -- i'm down 0.4lbs this week in comparison with last week. Yay for small victories!

texscrapper 10-27-2008 10:00 PM

Zeta - I have found that a great way to get extra point in is by eating nuts. A few peanuts (or peanut butter spread on an apple), sunflower, or pumpkin seeds tossed in your mouth or sprinkled on a salad add points fast without being a "junk" food!

ZetaMD2Be 10-27-2008 10:05 PM

OOohh. I like Peanut butter -- thanks for the suggestion, Texscrapper!

nancylmrn 10-27-2008 10:56 PM

Thanks for the tip on the suds texs! I will give the broth a test run next week!

Everyone seems to be doing awesome! will check in tomorrow

spryng 10-28-2008 07:24 AM

Morning all :)

Zeta your goal for this week sounds perfect :) I get 3 meals in and at least 1 snack per day :)

Tex, I wish they were homemade potstickers, lol.. but nope, frozen from Sams :) but they are only 1 pt each and really good with some soy sauce. They are chicken so the protein is really filling.

Well this is a COLD morning in here today. It's 25 outside and only 58 in this room.. we are getting our gas meter put back in today. We have them remove it each summer because if not we still get a hefty gas bill even though nothing but the central heat is gas so we alleviated that problem by having it removed all together. So this will be the last cold morning we have to deal with inside here :) I'm ready to shed some layers later today, lol
I plan on cooking today, I'm shamed to say everything I ate yesterday was from the microwave, lol.. I have days I'm just too tired or busy to put out the effort. But not today :) I'm gonna make some breakfast burritos when I get back from taking the kids to school/daycare. I keep seeing them on the menu thread and they sound so good :) Dinner I'll have to take something out of the freezer.
Well I better get around. Be back later! :)

sxulcmnky 10-28-2008 07:43 AM

good morning party people :D thanks everyone :D i <3 my beer and that's one of my problems... but i've done good with a pack of miller lite in my fridge that i've really only had one of since i moved into the new place... wine is my weakeness too but i generally don't drink too much at home, but friday i'm going out to party (and dress a little slinky to show off the new bod some:D) and that's where i'll be tested. i'll just have to use some of my extra weekly points that day. i was 7 points short yesterday but was too tired to go make something to eat or to rummage through the cupboards for something to eat (i.e., almonds, PB, some more dry cereal, etc).

BUT I LOST 3.2LBS THIS WEEK! and made my halloween goal early! that's a total of 10.6lbs this month

texscrapper 10-28-2008 10:28 AM

I wanted to share a GREAT recipe with you guys - It is from the WW Turnaround cookbook. I made it last night so that I could eat it today. I tasted the broth last night and it was delish! I am looking forward to it for lunch. I did slightly modify the recipe, so I will post both versions for you.

Shrimp and Soba in Fragrant Broth (Original Recipe)- 5 pts per serving

6 oz Soba noodles
4 c reduced sodium chicken broth
1/4 pound sliced mushrooms
4 quater size slices peeled fresh ginger
3 cloves garlic
2 scallions
1 carrot, sliced
1 T soy sauce
3/4 lb peeled and deveined large shrimp
1 c fresh snow peas, trimmed

Cook the noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse under cold water, and set aside.

Combine the broth, mushrooms, ginger, garlic, scallions, carrot and soy sauce in a large sauce pan; bring to a boil over med high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes. Add the shrimp and snow peas, return to a simmer. Cook until the shrimp are just opaque in the center and the snow peas are crisp-tender, 3-4 minutes.

Divide the noodles among 4 bowls; fill each bowl with 1/4 of the broth mixture.

Ok - here are my modifications. I halved the recipe in case I didn't like it ;)
and replaced and omitted a few ingredients - My version in 3.5 pts per serving :D

Shrimp & Ramen in Fragrant Broth - 3.5 pts per serving

1 pk Choice Ramen noodles
2 c reduced sodium chicken broth (1 can)
1/4 pound sliced mushrooms
1/4 t ginger (I used ground ginger, not fresh)
1 1/2 t minced garlic
1 carrot, sliced
1 T soy sauce
4 oz peeled and deveined large shrimp
1/2 c fresh snow peas, trimmed (about 8-10 snow peas)

Discard the seasoning package. Cook the noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse under cold water, and set aside.

Combine the broth, mushrooms, ginger, garlic, carrot and soy sauce in a large sauce pan; bring to a boil over med high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes. Add the shrimp and snow peas, return to a simmer. Cook until the shrimp are just opaque in the center and the snow peas are crisp-tender, 3-4 minutes.

Divide the noodles among 2 bowls; fill each bowl with 1/2 of the broth mixture.

:D

nancylmrn 10-28-2008 11:44 AM

Oh my texs I am going to try that tonight for dinner! I have some left over shrimp I need to use up, I always have the broth and choice ramon here at the house. I am going to omit mushrooms but add some cabbage and onion it should work out about the same yummy!

cher37 10-28-2008 11:56 AM

Congratulations SALLY!!!!

Way to Go!! :congrat:

... Any tips .... are you on Core or Flex?

nancylmrn 10-29-2008 01:53 PM

Well I ended up buying this bag of mini candy bars last night but I am keeping them in my garage until 'the day' of treaters.

Today is my shp day and I hope not to be tempted to open that bag. I thnk I can resisit if I plan my food better

jazzmegirl 10-29-2008 02:27 PM

Hi, ladies. I've just started the online program, I'm five three staring weight 156 pounds, want to lose 30-40 pounds. I've had success with WW flex before, but never stuck wth it for long enough. I am allowed 22-26 pts depending on activity level. Nice to meet you all.
Amie

texscrapper 10-29-2008 04:33 PM

Hi Amie  Welcome to our gang! Good luck with your weight loss! We're always here if you need support!

SXU - :congrat: on the loss - WTG!

Spryng - Hope you're warming up! It is 45-55 degrees in the early mornings here (before the sun comes up), and I am FREEZING! I don't know how you cold weather gals manage!

Nancy - Read you other post on the main page - and I can sympathize! Hope you managed better today!

Well, yesterday was terribe for me point wise - I was RAVENOUS all day long. :hun: Nothing I ate filled me up - and boy did I eat. I decided to switch my plan up a bit so I am doing a lower point day today in order to compensate. Whew - that has never happend to me before, so I don't know what to make of it!

Today was a better OP day - I had a bigger lunch out with friends, but still have 8 points til bedtime. Wenever I go out at lunch I always eat a light supper since I'm usually not as hungry. I'm hoping that lowering my points today and continuing back OP tomorrow will all work out for WI on Friday.

Well, thats all for now - I will post my menu for today on the menu thread - hope you all have a great day!

spryng 10-29-2008 04:49 PM

Afternoon all! :)
Sorry I didn't get back on last night, I had a family crisis that stressed me out to the max. And I wanted to binge today to feel better and my dh even offered to go get me whatever I wanted but then I thought and thought about it and said no, I ended up with a roast beef sandwich from subway (5 pts) and a pkg of apple slices (0 pts) and that did the trick :) I was very proud of myself because a large fry and chocolate shake and big mac was screaming my name, lol..

Tex, yep we are nice and cozy now that the gas is back on :) no more freezing mornings for me. I'm really cold natured so I'm glad to be warm again, lol I haven't had a ravenous day yet on ww but I know it's coming, you did good by switching your days! ww is so flexible that way :)

Welcome Amie! I hope you feel at home here and please post often! We offer great support :)

Nancy, just remember to not deny yourself too much or it could lead to a binge. Maybe you can just have one after dinner or something to curb that craving :) But hold strong! this week is almost over!!

Well, tonight I'm planning on having pork chops... have no idea how I'm preparing them yet, lol.. or what sides I'm having.. I need to be one of those people that plan entire menus out for the week but I'm not, lol.. I always plan at the last minute, sometimes while I'm cooking, lol.. so you never know what you'll get from me, lol
ok, I'm off here for now. Have a great evening all!

nancylmrn 10-29-2008 10:31 PM

Welcome Amie new faces always welcome

Well today like I said is my shp day and all I have been able to so far eat is 16pts and I have up to 35! talk about a switcher roo form yesterday.

If I don't make my points today I will continue on with the plan and not worry about it. I have come to realize and maybe texs you can back this up...there are days when we have to be flexible and eat when we are craving but still be mindful of the 'weekly' points not the daily and move on...does that make sense?

anyway these past few days I may be overdoing my activities -- I am feeling more discomfort from surgery than I did the first week. so I am vowing to slow down and rest each afternoon until my 3 week check up a week from friday. But I am still going to stay op I look at it as my own personal goal to keep with it during the bad and when the good hits it will be a piece of cake!

texscrapper 10-30-2008 10:05 AM

Well, I am almost 4 months into WW and I have just begun to venture outside of my "comfort zone" as far as recipes. I have been pulling recipes from "healthy" magazines and WW cookbooks and trying them. :chef: Surprisingly I am finding that I like LOTS of the new stuff I am trying - and so does my family - who would have thought?

Anyway, I have also realized that I do much better when I post my menu on line. I feel so accountable to eat what I have posted - especially when I'm home all day and there is the chance of boredom eating :eating2:

Tomorrow is my WI day and I'm hoping that I didn't mess myself up too badly on Tues when I was starving. I did not make good choices the second half the day - unless Recees Peanut Butter cups have become a food group

Is anyone else trying out new recipes? If so, what sites do you browse to find things to cook/eat?

I am making 2 recipes today that I found in a WW cookbook - One is Smokey Black Bean Soup, the other Jamacian POrk tenderloin. I will post the results later!

Have a great OP day everyone!

spryng 10-30-2008 06:51 PM

Evening all! :)

Tex I wish I'd try more new recipes but my kids are so darn picky and there is nothing harder on me than going out of my way to make something new and they won't even try it because they "think" it looks weird etc.. drives me nuts. But I LOVE all foods and I love to try new things etc... I really would like to learn to make sushi at home... Good luck on your wi tomorrow! Mine is tomorrow too. Tom has been visiting all week so I'm having a "fat" week where I just feel bigger.. so I'm hoping to see a loss, keep your fingers crossed!

Nancy, I completely agree with you about those kind of days. If you don't give in to some cravings you start feeling deprived and that leads to rebellion and binging, lol.. at least for me anyway. So if I'm wanting chocolate and I can't get past the craving I give myself a couple dark chocolate doves or something.. but I haven't really been dealing with it so far, but this is only my 4th week OP. I expect lots of up and downs and the months go by :) :)

Anyone watch oprah today? she is doing the show on the Biggest Loser, showing how those who lost all their weight on the show are keeping it off now etc, it's really motivating! I wish they'd let me on the show, lol..
Well I hope everyone is having a great day OP! :) I'll check back in later :)

spryng 10-31-2008 07:47 AM

Good news!!! I'm so excited, down 1.4 lbs this week, yipee!!! and I retook my measurements, here are my 6 week results
arms I lost 1 inch
thighs 2 inches off both!
and here's the best one, WAIST 4 1/2 inches total lost!!!!! WOO-HOO!!! I'm so thrilled about those numbers! I have to contribute most of those inches to the Step Diet, I didn't do the diet plan but I did their walking plan for over 4 weeks during the time I was losing those inches..
ok there's my stats for today, I need to go update my ticker, let's have a great OP day everyone! :o)

texscrapper 10-31-2008 08:11 AM

Happy Halloween everyone! :witch: My three boys are so excited today - thank goodness the little ones are in nursery school - I may have a shot at finishing thier costumes. My oldest is going to be a scarecrow and the twins will be crows - I can't wait to take pics of them!

Well, WI was this morning and I am down 3.8 lbs! :yay: Guess I just needed to get that one day out of my system this week!

Spryng - WTG on the inches lost and weight dropped! :bravo: I always measure myself on the 1st of the month and record so I am looking forward to that to - never thought I'd say that

Hope everyone is having a great day!

nancylmrn 10-31-2008 11:01 PM

CONGRATS TO SPRY & TEXS! you both should pat yourself on the back or better yet pat yourself for me LOL

Yesterday was a crazy crazy day. My mom called me, she had tripped and fell on a sidewalk and I had to take her to ER..well 7 hrs later she has multiple fractures of her nose and feeling pretty yukki. I was not able to really stay op. When I got home at 9:00pm I was so hungry I just chowed down on anything that did not bite me back. I don't think I will have a loss this week

Then today I did pretty good but I am afraid when WI comes around Sunday I will not be as successful as you both but there is always next week LOL

Well the treaters are coming in waves here so I am going to jump off and answer the door so DH does not have to do all the work

ZetaMD2Be 11-01-2008 01:34 AM

Hi ladies!

Sorry, I've been awfully quiet this week! Nancymlrn, I'm sorry to hear about your mom's fall! But I'm glad that she only injured her nose, as opposed to her hip or something like that. I wish her a speedy recovery!

It's been a pretty good food week. I've eaten within my points everyday this week and gotten exercise in 5 days! YIPPEE! I bought a new WW cookbook today - the one about takeout food (different cuisines - Mexican, Chinese, Thai, etc.) and I'm looking forward to cooking some of those options this week. I love Mexican and Chinese!

I noticed that the days that it's hardest for me to eat on plan are the days when my friends want to go out to lunch. I ate 19 points at lunch on Tuesday! I was still able to salvage the day and eat within my points for dinner after getting in an hours worth of exercise. After that, I declined going out to eat with them for the rest of the week!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Cassie

spryng 11-01-2008 08:27 AM

Morning all :)

well last night went well. The kids had a blast! This was Lilly's (my 2 yo) first halloween to actually go to doors. Last year she just stayed in the stroller and ate m&m's and was perfectly happy, lol.. but this year she was tricker trickin (As she called it, lol) We went for about 2 hrs so it was good exercise as well.

Cassie, that is so great that even with eating out and having a high pt meal you still managed to stay within your pts for the week! And congrats on the exercise! I also work out 5x's a week. When I did ww a few years ago I didn't work out at all. I was so lazy, lol. But I lost all my weight but even at my goal weight I was a size larger than I should have been and i know that was due to not working out. So this time around, even if it slows my weightloss I'm determined to work out 5x's a week so that I can tone along with losing fat and I think with the inches I lost that is happening :) most days I just get on my treadmill but some days I do The Firm. What have you been doing?

Nancy, so sorry about your mom!! How do they correct fractures in the face? that sounds so painful! you may still have a decent wi like Tex did, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for ya :)

Tex 3.8 lbs is AMAZING! maybe your body needed you to jump start it. I know that like on atkins if I stuck to the plan 100% my weight loss would stall etc after a few weeks but if I just went crazy one day eating carbs etc it would shock my body and the weight loss would jump start again. Sometimes you just have to fool your body, lol.. but whatever you did it worked!! Congrats!

Well the kids were being noisy this morning and woke me up, we didn't get in bed until well after midnight so I'm dragging here. Probably should make some coffee to wake me up, lol.. I'll check back in later!

nancylmrn 11-01-2008 04:51 PM

Thanks all for the notes on my mom, it gave me quite a scare
Today is actually a good day, had to go into the office for a few hours but the reward was I went to breakfast with business partner. We go to a restaurant that will sub egg beaters for eggs and I get tomato slices instead of hashbrowns, then because I do well there I indulge with a slice of toast and jam so it was easy to stay within my points

it sounds like all the kiddies had a great time with halloween, I remember it was always the best fun growing up, because you knew christmas was right around the corner
