angel food cake and pineapple..points?

Hi!

I asked about this in the recipe thread as well, but it seems kind of quiet over there so I am gonna just ask here as well. TIA for any help!

I have been told and have seen recipes for angel food cake with crushed pineapple and it's 2 points per slice. The way I calculate it is it's 4 points for 1/12 of an angel food pan. So if I cut it into 20 slices I get 2 points. Has anyone else tried this? Maybe I am using the wrong brand of cake. My motehr in la wamke sit all the time and uses and angel food pan (tube pan) and says it's 2 points.

My cake mix just calls for water if you make it the regular way. It's 3 points without the pineapple. Once you add in the pineapple it adds a point. Maybe I am doing it wrong? How would you guys calculate this?

Every recipe I read says it's 2 points for a large slice. 1/20 of a regular angel food cake pan isn't that large. Am I cooking it in the wrong pan?

Cake mix-140 calories, 0 fat, 0 fiber. 1 serving is 1/12 of the cake.

Crushed pineapple (they did not have water in crushed pineapple just natural juice)-70 calories, 0 fat and 2 fiber. 1 serving is about 1/2 a cup or 1/4.5 of the can

Any help would be awesome b/c It's sitting in my kitchen cooling as I type!

I think the serving size is not 1/12th of the cake - it's much smaller. You're probably right on the 1/20th. We are trying to lose weight so it would make sense you would have a smaller dessert.

Mastercook has angel food cake mix listed at 140 calories per 1/12 serving. Using their calculations, and adding in a 20 oz can of crushed pineapple (in juice) it gives me 158 calories, 0 fat, and 0 fiber (3 points) for 1/12 serving. If you cut it into 20 servings, it is 95 calories (2 points). If I adjust the totals based on 130 cal per 1/12 serving, the points values don't change.

Hi....I make this all the time and I calculate 3 pts. My pan I use is a 9x12 and I divide it up into 12 equal slices. For a nice change, I also serve a little fruit cocktail over the top. YUM YUM!!! I always save pts for this one!!! :carrot:

Thanks so much!!! I have master cook I should have done it that way. DUH :dizzy: LOL

I know I can't eat the entire cake, but 1/20 of an Angelfood cake is almost so small you can't slice it. Especially if I could have 1/12 of it plain for 3 points. My mother in law must be wrong then, I'll have to let her know b/c she will has this alot! The furit cocktail idea sounds good!

Anyway, Thanks! I will be sure to save myself 3 points so I can enjoy it! It smells so yummy.

I'm definitely going to have to try this recipe. I LOVE pineapple!

If you cut it into 12 pieces it is 3 ponits a slice. It also makes 24-36 cupcakes at 1 point each or 2 for 3 points.

Additionally you have to remember that 1 whole serving of the pineaple is not used in a whole serving of the cake. I beleive there is only like 6 or maybe 7 servings in the can of pineapple thus making it only 1/2 a serving and with teh added fiber it still makes it 3 points a 1/12 of the cake slice.

KellyS brings up a good point. My recipie calls for a 15oz can of crushed pineapple. If you use a larger can (20oz) the points would obviously go up. :)

Actually the original recipe is for a 20 oz can of crushed in own juice. I always used a 15 oz can because otherwise it was too wet.

BTW try these 2 options too:

1) instead of the pineapple a can of light cherry pie or strawberry pie filling --- still 3 points for 1/12 of the cake

2) add 1 4-serving container of sugar free jell-o to the cake mix and the amount of water called for on the box and bake

Yummy sounding ideas Kelly! I used a 20 ounce can which said it had 4.5 servings in the can, so you are right you're not getting a full serving of the pineapple. It was a little sticky. But it was still super good, but I'm staying away from it for a while. I counted my points and stayed on track but I ate more cake than I should have ;) Plus my kids HATED it so there was nobody to share it with.

You don't have to use the entire box at once- you could use the smaller cans of pineapple and make a smaller cake. I'm not sure how many ounces of pineapple are in the smaller cans- Dole sites says 8oz so that would be a little under 1/2 of a 20oz can. Add it to 1/2 of the cake mix and you can have your cake...and eat it too- all of it, if you wanted to and it would be only be 18 points, which is a lot better then the 36 if you ate the entire full sized cake. You may be able to find even smaller cans of pineapple- I always buy the biggest size so I don't know what is available for indiviual serving cans and such.

You can do this with any cake mix/purchased baking mix as a way to increase variety, especially if you are the only one eating it.

It freeze really well too.

I made this cake a couple of weeks ago and it was wonderful.
I always do my own calculations to check the points for my self.

I came up with 3.4 points per 1/12 of a cake

I used Delmonte Pineapple in 100% juice (no sugar added)
20 oz. can has 315 Calories 0 fat and 4.5 Fiber

I used Better Crocker Angel Food Cake
1 box has 1680 Calories 0 fat and 0 fiber

For a total of 1995 Calores 0 fat and 4.5 fiber...Divide that by 12 and you get 166.25 Calories , 0 fat and .375 Fiber

(Calories/50)+(Fat/12)+(Fiber/5)
(166.25/50)+(0/12)+(.375/5)= 3.40 Points
