Points for Carrots

Could someone explain to me why 1 cup of uncooked carrots is 0 points, but 1 cup of cooked carrots is 1 pt? Usually when I cook carrots, all I do is boil them in water until they're tender, then i use Parkay spray butter on them.

Because 1 cup of raw carrots cooks down to about 1/2 a cup. Also they are high in natural sugars thus making them a higher caloric value.

Personally I am from the old school and do not count any points for carrots but I rarely eat them and besides I didn't get fat eating carrots.

Kelly,
I agree with you. Who gets fat on carrots!!!!!
Also, I don't count points for onions!

I'm from the "old school" too. Onions and carrots are free.
I also don't limit my fiber - (there aren't too many items with more then 4 grams anyhow)

Carrot confusion

At the risk of sounding really stupid.......I don't understand why the reduction of carrots after cooking, gives them a point. Help!!! Coobird

Maybe because 1 cooked cup = 2 raw cups?

Kelly_S 03-02-2003 05:35 PM

That is right. 1 cup raw yields about 1/2 a cup cooked....thus 2 cups raw yields about 1 cup cooked and the calories are there.....

Still did you get fat eating carrots.......probably not!

CIN 03-06-2003 01:20 PM

My understanding for that is:
Because WW made a mistake in the book........one cup of carrots cooked or uncooked is 1 point!

They changed it a couple years ago because 1 cup contains around 70 calories,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,many mbrs were not losing as fast as they wanted and many ates tons of those little crunchy carrots.they do contain calories!

If you have a few they are free.............

1 cup of carrots DOES NOT contain that many calories!

OK, this is from the USDA nutritional database...

1 cup (122g) of raw carrot strips or slices.

52 calories
0.23 grams of fat
3.7 grams of fiber

that is 0.3 points on the Winning Points program.

1 cup cooked carrots slices (156g) {notice it's now 156g}

70 calories
0.28 g fat
5.2 g fiber

123 Points = 0.4 points
Winning Points = 0.6 points

CIN 03-07-2003 04:37 PM

ok ok ok

ok 52 or 70.if you are following WW like it is written 1 cup is 1 point.........................right? Right!

Only cooked! LOL!

I still DO NOT and WILL NOT count carrots as I didn't get fat eating them. LOL!

Neon 03-14-2003 04:19 PM

I too don't count carrots. I do the fiber cap as I loose better that way, but, my carrots and onions are still free in my book :)

I was also a member when carrots were free and loved it, but I've buckled to the rules that they count for a point now. Of course, before I'd just grab a few, now I measure out my cup of them and munch them all afternoon.

fatand40+ 03-29-2003 02:47 PM

WW must have different 'rules' for different countries because here in the UK carrots are a no point veg as are most other veg. The exceptions being things like potatoes, peas and parsnips.
