Whole Grain Ideas
Hi!
What do y'all use to fulfill this good health guideline every day? Need some fresh ideas. Thanks! |
I sometimes eat Steel Cut Oates, I really like the texture.
Also, Ive switched to whole grain bread. My family even is ok with it. Thats about it....I need ideas as well!! |
I agree with the steel cut oats -- but sometimes they take too long to prepare. So in a pinch I love Kashi waffles and Orowheat whole wheat muffins.

Wasa Multi Grain Crisps!

I am a huge fan of Kellogg's Cracklin Oat Bran cereal, but it's too high in sugar. I was eating Fiber One cereal too, but found my blood sugar was spiking too much in the morning and I started gaining weight.
I use whole wheat pasta, brown rice, quinoa, Ak-Mak crackers that are 100% whole wheat, steel cut oats, but there are lots of non-grain sources of fiber too. Nuts and seeds, dried beans (lentils, split peas and black beans are a favorite at my house, and we have one meal that includes dried beans every day), high fiber veggies (avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, edamame beans and green beans, cabbage, spinach and broccoli), and high fiber fruit (apples, bananas, berries and citrus). I like Quinoa from the bulk bins @ the store.
I also like Fiber One Cereal--one serving is 1/2 of rec. daily allowance. I also love shredded papaya right now. I love grilled vegetables. I grill whatever is on sale--red peppers, onions, eggplant, you name it. Everything is great on the grill. We are now eating only steel cut oats--not regular oatmeal anymore. You can dump them in a crockpot before you go to bed and they are ready in the morning when you get up. |
When you put the steel cut oats in the crockpot, how much milk or water do you use with them? And what heat setting do you use?
|
Hey, the crockpots here in the states come w/a plug in.
1 part steelcut oats 4 parts water dash of salt Load it all in and give it a stir. Cook on low for 6-8 hours. Just before serving you can add whatever you like--raisins, raw almonds, fresh fruit, etc. I am sure they have a similar cooking device where you are. I also have a recipe for overnight no cook (regular) oats if you want it. |
I cook with Buckwheat Ferinetta (only available at minn dak online), and if you like wheat breads you can use buckwheat ferinetta in almost any receipe. Today I made pumpkin bread and banana bread, and its pretty taste for whole grain bread. Ever since I started eating 1/2 of this stuff a day, through different receipe's portioned out, I hardly have any issues with hunger.

Fiber One is not a grain. Some of the other things mentioned, such as the muffins, are probably not whole grain, either. To be a whole grain, the first ingredient must be whole grain. Flour doesn't count. If a bread, muffin, bagel is whole grain, you should be able to see pieces of grain in it.
I love quinoa, barley, bulgar, wheat berries, and brown rice. Not only is quinoa a whole grain, it is also high in protein. |
Quinoa is a complete protein!
Whole grain flours are whole grains. I make delicious spelt pancakes. I thought they would taste gross but I love them! |
Love me some quinoa!

Quinoa is really good! I roast the seeds in a pan and cook them with ff/salt-free chicken broth for extra flavor. Last night I roasted it with some garlic.
I also LOVE whole-wheat couscous! |
