Welcome to the group Travelchick!!! Way to go on your weigh in!! That had to feel awesome. I started cutting back on the carbs (way back) the end of December. My first week of that I had tremendous headaches. In fact, I went to bed very early New Year's Eve because of it. I'm over the headaches thank goodness. Good luck to you in this new way of eating. We will all be healthier in the long run!
Maureen, hope your meeting went well. I had some chocolate yesterday for the first time in ages. It tasted good, but I didn't eat any more than that one piece. Before I would have eaten many pieces!! Tina, I agree about time going fast! Yesterday was our 100th day of school. It seemed to get here faster this year for some reason! We had ice/sleet/snow today but no early dismissal. The districts on both sides of us dismissed early, so their kids were home before it got so bad. We stuck it out until regular time. Boo hiss. I am so glad that tomorrow is Friday. I need to get out my walking video and start doing it again. I know it would make me feel better. Need to get over this cold and that would make me feel even better! lol |
i have a question and I feel goofy for asking. But does walking around walmart and the grocery store count as exercise?
|
Hi Tammy-
I appreciate your kind welcome. Your right...I feel encouraged about the weigh loss. Thanks for letting me know that the headaches are normal. I did cut the carbs back (way back). I want to start my walking regime again, but we have had snow and ice on the ground for the last 3 weeks. Infact, it's sleeting out right now (and the streets look dangerous). Good luck to you all! Bye for now, BJ (AKA Travelchick) |
Lynnie, I think it depends on how much walking you are doing. My doctor says that any walking at all, is better than NO walking. I do alot of walking at school on certain days of the week, and I always count that as part of a workout. It might be good to invest in a pedometer and check how many steps you are taking. I have one, but I haven't been using it lately. The "goal" is supposed to be 10,000 steps per day. If you can increase the number of steps each day (even if not hitting the 10,000), I'd say that would be great. Good luck!!
Hi BJ! I know of many others who dealt with the headache from cutting back on the carbs. It's amazing that it happens. I guess that's letting us know how many of them we were eating! Scary, huh? We've had ice too. In fact, we are on a 2-hour delay this morning because of icy roads and fog. Bummer, because we were supposed to have an assembly with a jazz quartet this morning. I think the kids (and me!!) would have really enjoyed it. Hope they are able to get it rescheduled. I'm going back to bed or to the recliner for a while. School doesn't start until 10, and it's just 6:30. I need more beauty sleep!!! lol |
Hi Tammy,
Thanks for the advise. My headache is a background kind of thing this morning....certainly not the overwhelming thing of yesterday. My son is a senior in HS, and they didn't have school again today....they've missed 6 or 7 days so far....at this rate he won't graduate until the 4th of July! Hope that your assembly gets rescheduled soon...it sounded fun. Lynnie--I agree with Tammy about the walking. I wear a pedometer and it really inspires me....it shows the steps you taken, the calories burnt and the mileage...it's kind of neat to keep track of your movements. It makes you want to go further each day! Ok, back to work.....good luck everyone! Bye, BJ |
BJ, I have a son who is a sophomore in high school. He's only been out of bed for about 20 minutes, just now getting into the shower. I was planning to leave for school about 9 to get some things done, but I don't think we'll make it. lol Our HS and elem. are in the same building, but our middle school is in a separate building. I'm a 2nd grade teacher.
Will your school have to make up all of the days that they miss? We have 5 extra days built into our calendar, so if we don't miss more than 5, we don't have to make them up. I really need to start wearing the pedometer again. I plan to wear it when we go to Disney the end of the month. I'm sure I'll be getting in plenty of steps then! The kids are really looking forward to it. Quite a few people in town are taking the trip down to watch the band march. It will be so exciting watching them march around the Magic Kingdom!!!! Can't wait!! I'm so glad tha I get to chaperone. Need to go do something to my hair to make myself presentable. lol |
Hi Tammy,
Yes, we had 5 days build in, so we're two over already, and we still have the rest of this month and all of March to worry about! Last year they took away President's Day, and all but 2 days of Spring break, and a couple teacher's work days, etc. We'll see. Drive safely on your way in.....I just took my garbage out and almost fell....it's so icy. Instead, I stepped in a puddle of melted snow and slush up to my knees.....lord am I miserable. Thank goodness, I work from home, so I could make a quick change before my phones go wild! I'm a travel agent. Sure hope that you have fun at Disney! We aren't planning any big trips for awhile because after 20 years with the same company, my hours have been "temporarily" reduced to 30 hours a week. Since our son will soon be going to college, we have to watch our finances. About two years ago I lost 70 pounds....from 242 to 173. (Yesterday I weighed in at 208, so at least I'm not back to my highest.) The original first 30 came off fairly easy, but the next 40 were walking miles! I walked compulsively.....3X's a day.....I averaged 6-8 miles a day. Once the weather gets better, I'm back to the grind! I live right across the street from a high school with a 50 acre campus. It's like a big park (that I don't have to mow!). Anyhow, there is also a beautiful track that they open to the publilc during "non school activity" hours. It's great...also I have a wonderful downtown area about 1 mile away, so I walk that way, sometimes stopping at my parents home to get my mother in on the action, and then do a couple more miles through Old Towne Winchester (Virginia). It's really a nice town to walk in. Okay, back to the phones. Have a great, OP day! Bye, BJ |
I'm addicted to my pedometer
I'm on my third one. I wore the first two out (although the second one was still brand new when it stopped working). The third one that I bought at K-Mart is a pedometer/radio/flashlight etc. I'm not crazy about it because it keeps resetting when I bump it. I like to wear it at work and I guess I bump it too much while sitting. Hope you don't mind me jumping in here. I'm doing WW at home and having a tough time of it. I always lurk and rarely post. I mostly write in PM's. I've had some bad experiences. But I was feeling a bit bold today (I'm the Mad Turtle and I guess I'm partially out of my shell). Good day to you all. Thanks for the forum time. Mary in WV

Hey Java Lady! (Boy that sounds good right now).....I see that you're in Northern WV.....I wonder if we're near one another? I'm in Winchester, and go to Shepherdstown to Contra dance. My husband and son are big into Contra dancing, and I know that it's good for me...but sometimes I get embarrassed about my weight and lack of stamina, and don't go. Anyhow, I'm hoping to get down a little more and not feel so self conscious. I've struggled with this weight all of my adult life. It's hard to believe that I was a skinny child!
I loved hearing from you! Be Bold.....we're all in this together. I'm sorry that you've had some negative experiences....it doesn't help, does it? I feel like I've joined a very kind sorority. I was sad to hear that you didn't have good results with your gastric surgery. I was just about ready to look into it, but I'm such a chicken. Hang in there.....we'll make it. I just appreciate every ones support. Have a great OP (icy) day--BJ Stay warm and dry....have a good OP day! Bye, BJ |
Hi Travelchick, nice to meet you (all of you for that matter)
Travelchick, I've heard of Sheppardstown, but I'm not real clear on where it is. But I'm sure I've never heard of Contra dancing. But if it gets you too tired to go on, it must be good exercise. Have a great day everyone. I'm just thankful all this is rain instead of snow, or I'd never get my front door open. EEK! :rain:

Hey Java,
Contra is English folk dancing....it's line dancing with various partners....it's extremely aerobic...the dances can go on for 15 minutes at a time. There is a caller (so it's sort of like sqare dancing, but nor really). I actually began taking ballroom dance lessons with my husband about a year and a half ago (after the big 70 pound loss). We both love it.....BUT, I quit going about 3-4 months ago because of gaining so much weight back in such a little time. We were dancing about 4 nights a week in classes, and then doing a dance once a week on Saturday nights. Shepherdstown is near Martinsburg, WV (if you know where that is), although I live in Winchester, VA. Well, I just finished up having a nice spinach salad for lunch and a small bowl of homemade chicken vegtable soup....it was pretty good! Now I have to figure up the points....maybe I should have done that 1st! It shouldn't be too bad....I used broth (from a chicken I had roasted yesterday) and skimmed all of the fat off..then sauted onions, mushroom, carrots, celery, red peppers in a skillet sprayed with Pam...then added a little of the broth and a TBSP of flour to thicken.....then the broth, a cup of diced chicken and 1 cup of fat free milk. I don't really like chicken much (or turkey), but it was pretty yummy and shouldn't have been too many points. Okay folks, I'm outta here....Bye for now-BJ |
Welcome Mary!! Glad to have you aboard!! We love to get newbies to join us oldies. lol Glad you came out of your shell for a visit!! Come often please.
BJ, we only live a mile from the school, so getting there isn't bad when it bad out. The parking lot was dangerous though! A sheet of ice. So was the sidewalk leading into the school. I would think that someone would have been out there putting salt or sand down. What do I know. What does your son plan to study in college? Will he attend one close to home or go away? Our son has been getting so many college letters already. He has a few favorites in mind, but we told him he has plenty of time to decide, so we'll check out more than his favorite three. He would like to teach history/social studies at the high school level. No big plans for the weekend, so I plan to get over this cold!! We are meeting my cousin and her hubby for dinner tomorrow night, so that will be fun. We haven't been out with them in ages. We always have a great time. Hope everyone else will be posting soon!! |
Hey Tammy,
I know what you mean about the ice....it's really bad! My mother's magnolia tree broke today and she was really upset. That's what we get for trying to have Southern trees and foliage in the Blue Ridge Mountains! My son is down to several colleges....His number one choice is a very small school about 7 hours away (boo hoo)...it's called Warren Wilson. It's tagged a "hippie school", but that's not really the case. It's a student run campus....300 acre farm and another 700 acres in the mountains with hiking trails, etc. It's based on a triad system of work/service and study. All students are required to work 3 hours a day to help run the campus...anything from working in the post office, to shoeing horses, locksmith, IT dept., etc. It's endless....so in essence they come out with not only their degree, but hopefully another marketable skill. They are also required to volunteer 100 hours to the community, along with studies. It's rigorous, but a very nice place (actually it's beautiful)! They also offer Contra dancing twice weekly, and lots of unusual studies (my son plays the banjo, and they teach old time clawhammer banjo there). It's probably the best place for him....he's been an only child and fairly indulged, so it sure wouldn't hurt him! (Although he's been so easy to raise....we'll miss him when he leaves.) He's also applied to UNC-Asheville, NC (again 7 hrs away), and he was accepted to Guilford College in Greensboro, NC (early action) with the offer of a $26K academic scholarship over 4 years! (Unfortunately, all of the above schools are either private or out of state and VERY expensive.) Our instate options are Virginia Tech and Longwood. I'm surprised that he even applied to Tech (since it's so big), but who knows.....we'll probably take another trip to look at his final 3 choices in the Spring. Whew, this is probably way more that you wanted to know! It's never too early to look and get ideas.....I think that you're lucky that you son is looking at schools already. We couldn't convince Joe that it would happen so quickly......and then POW, it's time to decide. How was your school day today? Have they rescheduled the assembly? I did okay at work....slower in the morning, but super busy later. I didn't get any exercise in today, but i am only at 20 points now, so I can have a snack before bedtime! Hope that you have a nice evening....Thanks for the message. It's nice to hear from you! Hey Mary....I didn't forget about you.....but Tammy asked me about my son, and I tend to ramble. We're so happy to have you here.....I know that the support really helps me, and I hope that you have nothing but positive experiences here! Talk with you all soon---BJ |
Hi Everyone,
Hope everyone is doing great! This week has gone by fast and slow, all in the same week. It seems like I got NOTHING done after school except lay on the couch. :) Welcome to the group BJ. This is a great group!!! We are all very supportive and have become very good friends. Tammy, I'm glad you are feeling better. Hope your cold goes completely away this weekend. Rest some Girl!!!! How is Mr. Tim doing? Does he and Jessica have any big plans? Tina, what's the weather like down your way? It's just cold here. Ladies, it's not cold like it is where you are at but it is cold for Texas. Maureen, glad to hear that you are doing good. We've missed you. Good luck on not smoking. I plan on doing nothing this weekend. I'm going to a spa party tomorrow. I'm sure they are going to try to sell us something. I have no plans of buying anything.:D Well, I'm off to get ready for bed. Pat's playing tonight so I'm taking it easy. It's the name of the game lately. Susan |
Greetings to our new members!
Boy, I don't know what's wrong. I havent been getting notices of posts here. Very Strange. BJ and Mary, welcome to this group. I'm glad Tammy has been around to talk to ya. I'm from Texas and proud of it. :D I'm a lifetimer who's finding her way back to a reasonable weight. Tammy, I'm so glad you are feeling better. Hey, I forgot you were going to Disney World. I bet the weather will be perfect for you. Get a good pair of shoes for the trip. Susan, your weekend sounds excellent ......... Larry and I don't have any plans. He's been working too hard and has been stressing out over selling his dad's house. BTW ........ y'all keep your fingers crossed. Closing date on the house should be Feb. 13th. We hope the buyer goes through with it. Maureen, I hope your meeting was good. Keep up the effort of becoming "smoke-free." Tina :flow1: |
