Hi, Turtles,
Thanks for the info, Kathy. I could manage the high sugar sweets and even the refined flour, but not potatoes, corn, and watermelon. However, I could only do it for a while. I'd never manage it as a lifestyle. I tried something similar many years ago, although the focus was only on sugar. It's even more difficult now because the food companies add sugar to just about everything. My week went very well. I journaled and counted points every day. I got in a lot of walking and yesterday I helped my son move back into his apartment after vacation, which meant carrying stuff upstairs. What was cool is that I didn't get too winded, which means I'm in better shape than I thought I was. My weight is the same, but that most likely means that I've lost a pound or two. It's PMS and I'm retaining water. Plus, I've had a bit more salt than usual a couple of days this week, which also skewed the numbers on the high side the days after. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with how it's going. I found something wonderful yesterday. We went to one of our favorite Mexican restaurants on the way home and then to Barnes & Noble. There, sitting on the magazine rack, was an old friend in new clothes. Eating Well magazine is back and ad free. It was always my favorite healthy cooking magazine. I thought of it as the "Bon Appetit" of healthy eating. The recipes aren't complicated. So, now we have Cooking Light and Eating Well to use for finding healthy recipes to add variety to our lives. They also have up-to-date information about healthy eating. I'm going to have to subscribe because none of the stores that sell it are in Salinas. They do have a web site, eatingwell.com. I haven't heard from Lori. I think about her every once in a while. I wish she'd come and post once in a while so we'd know how she's doing. Happy turtlin'! :wizard: :chef: Lin |
Lin, good for you for getting yourself back together with journalling and exercising. I agree, not getting winded when carrying things upstairs is a GREAT thing! Congratulations! :)
Kathy, I have a question about SB. I have read the book, and coupled with my classes from last semester it makes a lot of sense. I feel almost like I've been missing the forest for the trees, you know? Lin, SB explains our frustration with the calories in--calories out question. Turns out that there's been some question for some time about that little formula. High sugar foods cause the release of insulin (we knew that), insulin facilitates the storage of fat (we knew that too). What we did not realize is that insulin in our blood will store sugars as fat FIRST and then burn everything else for energy. This explains how you can be eating 900 calories a day but still gaining weight. Or, so the theory goes as I understand it. Anyway! So, Kathy, my question: I make a veggie soup with veggie stock, squash, zuchinni, onions, green pepper, celery, kidney beans, tomatoes, and various spices. The stock, I noticed today, has 4 grams of sugar per serving. Now, does this balance out because it is part of a recipe of things with no added sugars? When you're cooking, does each ingredient need to be less than 3 sugars or can things sort of balance each other out? I've checked out the SB board here, but it's overwhelming! Thanks for any help you can offer. :) Oh, and Kathy: go to Target to get the starter bracelet. It's less than $10, and it fits the charms from the "official" places. Target doesn't have individual charms you can choose from, but it'll get you started cheap. :) Bye Turtles, off to the movies with DH! |
HI Mousey!!! I think I do have a answer for you..Most vegies have a bit of sugar..so added up that must make 4. But it is ok. As long as you don't add potatoes, pasta, or beets or corn or anything with a hi gi it is ok. just eat till you feel good but don't over do...I am really doing good on this..I am not hungry at all between meals and I am not going nuts over thinking about sugar..
Yea the boards are totally wild...It is hard to respond to everyone so I don't.. So how are you doing Mousey??? Still going hog wild on the exercise??? I already signed up for a fitness lab at the college so I can go 2 or 3 days a week and that is besides my 4 days at curves..I am going to go mon/wed/fri/sat to curves and tues/thur at the college that will give my Sun to veg...I am looking forward to this all coming together and working...I know if i just keep it up, I will do good. But it has to be the eating part, the water part, and the exercise part..I saw all these gals in the last people mag...It was how they lost weight etc. Aall I kept seeing was that at 135 most were in a size 8..Size 8!!! Iwant to be a size 8!!! then I can give away all my size xl clothes and size 16 pants etc and I want 135 to be my 8!!! Well better get ready for bed.. Kathy ps ..Hi Lyn, Hi Lauren!!! Hope you had a good weekend and I know you will have a wonderful week. You to mousie... kd |
Kathy, thank you for your answer. :) I figured it would balance out, I just wanted to make sure!
In answer to your question, I am as always devoted to my gym and my workouts. I've had a bit of time to relax after inlaws visiting for the holidays, too, so I'm relaxing AND getting in good workouts! ;) I have not signed up for an activity class this semester--as it is I'm going to be on campus from 8am-6:15pm two days a week, and 8am-3:15pm two days. Sheesh! But I'll graduate soon, so it's worth it. The whole SB thing makes a LOT of sense to me, and it makes a lot of the puzzles and questions I have consistently had in the last year or so snap into place. It answers my frustration with calories in-->calories out; it explains my inability to lose while on an average of 28 points a day; it explains my need for daily naps last year; it also explains why I felt so marvelous on the plan that my ill-fated nutritionist gave me (I didn't lose on that plan, but I can't deny that I felt FANTASTIC. The reason I didn't lose had nothing to do with the foods in the plan, it had to do with how poorly it fit into my lifestyle). Interestingly, I have taken the "Are you a carb addict" questionaires in books like Atkins, Protein Power, and others. I never got pegged as a carb addict. I have always had a killer sweet tooth, though. Yesterday was my first day actively trying to avoid added sugars (I'm not much of a potatoes-rice-bread-corn person, anyway, so that's not a worry for me) and BOY did my sweet tooth rear its ugly head! I kept telling myself, "the first two weeks are the hardest" and finding alternatives. Thankfully we've got nice fuji apples right now. I'm going to cut added sugars out of my life. My dad has type II diabetes, and I really don't want to go there! I am planning to stay on points, and do a combination of both plans: SB to help me choose which foods are ideal, and WW to help me control quantity. We'll see what happens. I really feel positive about this--as I said, it answers so many questions! |
