SuperFoods! How many did you eat today?

FIVE so far!

Breakfast:
Pineapple
Yogurt, kefir
Oats
Honey
Nuts

Jayde 07-31-2006 11:06 AM

Only 9 yesterday. Mostly at breakfast.. I'm working on today.

Jen415 07-31-2006 12:24 PM

Breakfast:
1 c. Fibre one with 1/2 c. 2% milk

Snack 1:
two slices of Nature's Own whole wheat bread w/ 1T peanut butter (SF)

Lunch:
Leftovers (3 oz chicken, 1 c. mashed cauliflower, 1/2 c. mixture of green peas, lima beans and corn, and 1/2 sweet potato--all SF except corn)

Glory87 07-31-2006 12:36 PM

This is the plan:

Breakfast
muesli
non fat yogurt
blueberries
1/2 teaspoon honey

snack
low fat string cheese
almonds
dried cranberries

lunch
salmon salad (onions, pickle, low fat mayo)
whole wheat pita
spinach leaves
roasted tomato

Snack
cherries

Snack
grape tomatoes
carrots
orange pepper strips

Dinner
left over stir fry - tofu, onions, garlic, shitake mushrooms, red pepper, broccoli, carrots, spinach
brown rice

lots of tea

super foods 11!!- tea, salmon, tofu, broccoli, brown rice/whole wheat pita/muesli, yogurt, blueberries/cherries/dried cranberries, carrots/orange peppers, tomatoes/grape tomatoes, almonds, spinach
(from book 2 - onions, garlic, olive oil, honey)

nelie 07-31-2006 01:40 PM

My plan is:

Breakfast:
Ultimate meal shake (according to the ingredient list, it contains 6 superfoods in it and other good stuff, I count as 1 superfood) with unsweetened soy milk

Snack:
NF plain organic yogurt with blackberries

Lunch:
Ultimate meal shake with unsweetened soy milk
Salad with Romain lettuce, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms and carrots.

Snack:
Carrots with laughing cow wedge

Dinner:
Chicken, rice, beans, grilled veggies and a salad

So with my plan, I should have around 17 superfoods (some repeats such as carrots and my shake).

Oops, forgot to add that I will be drinking various forms of tea throughout the day so that should count as an additional superfood. Also I forgot about dessert which will probably be dark chocolate... So maybe around 20 superfoods today with repeats.

WaterRat 07-31-2006 02:30 PM

Ah, I've only just started counting these.

B'fast:
1/2 cup cottage cheese with 1/4 c raspberries (SF) and 1/4 c blueberries (SF)
whole grain wheat toast
1 TBSP natural PB (SF) I'm liking this better all the time BTW, bye-bye Jif

S1:
grande nf latte

S2:
hard boiled egg

Lunch:
turkey breast (SF) on whole grain wheat with mustard and avocado (SF)
tomato

S3:
Cameo apple, (edit: this had a large spoiled spot inside - ick! only ate 1/3); wedge of lf cheese

Dinner:
Hmmmm, depends if DH is home or at his yoga class - he was undecided when I left for work. If he's home I'll likely make a chicken stir-fry; if he's gone, I'll finish up the salmon manicotti with a spinach salad.

He'll be gone the rest of the week, which in a way makes meal-planning easier, though it also makes just grazing on junk easier too. Need to plan and hold myself to it!

Jen415 07-31-2006 02:49 PM

Hey gals! do you think this should be a daily thread?

phantastica 07-31-2006 03:39 PM

Yes, I do, Jen! I was thinking daily menus would also be fun, so we know what other ... um, "superfoodists" eat on a daily basis. I link to fitday on my profile, but I'd hardly consider myself a shining example just yet.

B: peanut butter, orange
L: strawberries, broccoli, purple onion, garlic
D: chicken, tomato (soup), kale, dark chocolate, corn

Eleven foods today.

Yesterday I had eight: yogurt, cherries, flaxseed, salmon, broccoli, tomato, onion, garlic

P.S. I love our little home, here! :D

joyofsix 07-31-2006 04:04 PM

If all goes as planned today:
Oats
apples
cherries/blueberries
evoo
garlic/onion
sweetpotato
tea
dark greens, romaine, spinach
tomato
almonds
dark chocolate

So 11 super foods, which considering I'm just eating the stuff I have on hand is pretty good.

olivia627 07-31-2006 07:57 PM

Okay, I went a little off of my 'plan' for the day, but here goes:

Breakfast:
pineapples
vanilla yogurt
wheat germ
oat topping (oats, nuts, honey, oil, cinnamon, nutmeg)

Snack:
granny smith apple
natural peanut butter
peach kefir

Lunch:
salmon
salad with sauteed shrimp & Lite Asian Sesame dressing

Dinner:
oven roasted asparagus & cherry tomatoes, cooked in olive oil
salmon cakes (made with salmon, bread crumbs, onion, egg & spices-my own experiment gone GREAT!)

Dessert:
cherries
soymilk
tea
square of dark chocolate

Total Calories: 1505
Total SuperFoods: 15 (I think...I can't count right now!)

Jayde 07-31-2006 10:32 PM

today.... 11

watermelon
rapini
onion + green onions
garlic
kimchi (my own super food for yogurt category)
evoo
green tea
millet
edamame
chestnuts + pine nuts (in a rice dessert)
raisins (in same dessert)

Not a great super foods day for me... but not bad.. I didn't eat much today.

trishn222 07-31-2006 11:48 PM

Today for me

oatmeal with wheatgerm and raisins

whole wheat spaghetti w/tomato based sauce, garlic, onions, mushrooms and meatballs

jambalaya brown rice, chicken breast, shrimp, tomatoes, onion, lots of garlic, evoo

orange
green tea

4 serv of oats
1 green tea
1 citrus
2 onions
2 garlic
1 chicken breast (turkey)
1 raisin (blueberry)
2 tomato

so 8 different kinds with 14 serv not a great super food day but not bad either.

Trish

Allikat 08-01-2006 09:45 AM

Hi all, I'm slowing trying to incorporate more whole, super foods into my diet. Yesterday was:

Bfast: Steel-cut oats/ Cranberries
Lunch: Salmon/ Spinach/Evoo/Cherries/Yogurt
Snack: Sunflower Seeds/Black Tea
Dinner: Soy breakfast sausage

I think that's 9!

olivia627 08-01-2006 10:38 AM

Allikat, that's GREAT! Just getting some of them in will make a huge impact on how you feel physically! Atleast, that's been my experience thus far. Keep it going...looks real good!

hockeyfan7 08-01-2006 02:26 PM

Hi! I really like the idea of the superfoods -- great nutrition

Today so far I have had:

Peanut Butter
Flaxseed
Cherries
Peach
Strawberries
Raspberries
Yogurt

I've been trying to follow the guy from Harvard's School of Diet and Nutrition's super foods eating plan every day.

Do you mean Walter Willet? I'd like to get his book next. A friend had good things to say about it.

It's nice to be part of a community of folks who all have similar goals :D !

WaterRat 08-01-2006 04:22 PM

Well, yesterday's dinner didn't, well, let's just say it wasn't "in the plan." :)

Today:
B: cold cereal with 1% milk and blueberries (sf)
whole wheat toast with natural pb (sf)

S1: hard boiled egg
9 organic blue corn chips

L: salmon salad (sf)
orange pepper strips (sf)

S2: cottage cheese with blueberries (sf) and raspberries (sf)

D: ??? DH has left, so I need to plan for just me the next 4 nights, then I'm gone too, and will be working at making good choices at restaurants and with conference food.

I have both of Willet's books. The one that came out in 2001 and his newest one. The first was very technical but worth the read. This second was also very eye opening.

Actually it was his first book that had the greatest impact on me. I felt like someone had just hit me over the head. I was spinning with so much new information and it was great.

How Many Superfoods Eaten Today?

Well, Olivia627 got me started doing this whole SF thing and I just started yesterday.

Today I ate:

1 cup Fibre One, blueberries, 1/2 cup skim milk

Spinach salad, olives, tomatoes, carrots, EVOO dressing, turkey

So - how many superfoods is that? I think 9 of them. I'm loving this so far!

Glory87 08-01-2006 09:31 PM

Not counting duplicates and using both books, I count 9 too:

Fiberone/spelt
Blueberries
Spinach
Tomatoes
Carrots
Olive Oil
Turkey
Salmon
onions

Hiiiiiiiiiii mimi! :welcome: :wel3fc: :welcome3: :welcome2:

Oh, did I mention WELCOME! Now, if we can just get KJ to join the SuperFood party!

Jayde 08-02-2006 01:01 AM

Today... Only 10

Lunch was a disaster. I brought mine to work but was invited to a catered lunch.. It was awful.. I am so disappointed in the choices and that someone would actually call this lunch. I should have just eaten what I brought even if it was rude..

steel cut oats
soy milk
flax seed
orange juice

strawberries, grapes, cranraisins

onion
garlic
sesame seeds (so many in a lot of different side dishes at dinner)
black beans

I had other healthy things at dinner that aren't superfoods... (perilla leaves, watercress, kobi (fern), spicy soup.

olivia627 08-02-2006 01:16 AM

Not bad jayde! Sorry about lunch, though. I agree, next time eat what you brought. Your health is more important than 'etiquette'! And who knows, maybe you'll inspire them to offer a SuperFood lunch next time!!! Wishful thinking???

Well, I had:

oats, wheat germ
dried wild blueberries
honey
walnuts
salmon
onion
EVOO
pineapple
turkey
broccoli
carrots
tea
soymilk
cherries
Oh, and of course, DARK CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!

I'm at a loss... Dark chocolate...forgettable? It hurts to even write it!
Okay, I need to go to bed...and dream chocolate dreams!!!! You know, I went to Hershey Park in Hershey, PA when I was in grade school and bought this brown coffee mug with white letters that read: Give Me Chocolate, Or Give Me Death!

Guess it still holds true!

As a kid I lived near a chocolate factory in Massachusetts. In second grade I could smell the chocolate while playing in the school yard... when the wind blew just right you could almost taste it in the backyard.

I can still smell it... though I am miles and miles and years and years away.

Dream chocolate dreams... there are no calories in that!

olivia627 08-02-2006 02:11 AM

Jayde, that is an awesome memory to have and to share with your children, grandchildren, great-grands, etc!

(You know you'll live to see your great-great-great-great grandchildren eating the way we're eating!!! And you'll be the spunkiest old lady on the block!!)

My mom grew up in Philadelphia for a while and could smell the aroma of the Nabisco factory. She can still remember the smell, too! Thinking back to your memory, I'm sure it just makes you smile...

Ha! I know exactly where that is! I grew up south of Boston and I remember the chocolate smell very well. :)

I'm soooo jealous... Actually, where I'm soon to be moving is next to a coffee 'factory' and the rich aroma saturates the air every morning and at different times of the day. I'm not a big coffee drinker, but the fresh roasted smell is so nice!

hmmmm it was like heaven! Mansfield Ma.. I visited there several months ago... not the same without the chocolate smell. (the factory is gone)

WaterRat 08-02-2006 06:44 PM

Yes, my BIL and his family lived in Mansfield for about 30 years. Move to Maine about 4 years ago. We used to go to N. Attleboro all the time when I was a kid, through Mansfield. I grew up in Braintree.

Wow.. what a small world.. :)

I didn't know anyone outside of North Attleboro knew North Attleboro. ;) Mansfield for that matter either. Have to say Braintree is a new name to me. (I was a little kid you know.. :) ) But I can see where it is thanks to Mapquest. Very small world.

I have an aunt & uncle who lived in Cumberland, RI for ~25 years. N. Attleboro and Braintree both sound very familiar to me!

My mom and aunt (the one above) grew up in Fall River.

In fact, most of my family lives in southern New England. Wish I did, too :(.

WaterRat 08-02-2006 07:29 PM

Na, you don't want to live there now. It is soooo crowded! My sister still lives in Plymouth and DH's father is in Westwood, his sister in Wrentham, and her daughter in Foxboro, so we see a lot of family there. I get stress driving there, esp from the airport or anywhere around Boston. DH just flew there for his mother's funeral and flew in Providence, RI due to all the mess with the tunnels in Boston. We're going to BIL's in Maine for Thanksgiving, and flying into Boston, but fortunately we're going north. :)

Jayde 08-02-2006 09:36 PM

How many today.. let's see (duplicates are in italics)......13

steel-cut oats (that's a shocker :p )
flax seed
cranraisins
soy milk

pomegranate juice
lotsa garlic, green onions, and onions in a pork neckbone soup
rapini and garlic with olive oil
couple cherry tomatoes

millet (mixed with white sticky rice)
plain yogurt with blueberries
green tea

All this talk about New England is making me hungry for a good old fashioned New England clam bake... with the pit and all.... hmmmmmmmmmmmm

clams... that could be #14 if I had some....:p

Edited to add: 111 degrees in Boston today.. um really .. I think I am glad I'm not there. :)

olivia627 08-02-2006 11:45 PM

Do share your method for making that pork neckbone soup!!!

Here in PA, it was over 100 degrees too!

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

I can't take this humidity anymore!!!!

Sure.. I'll put it on the Asian Soup thread.

It's funny that you ask for soup when it is hot outside. :D Actually, I've learned to eat hot soup when the weather it is hot... it actually feels refreshing.

Jayde 08-03-2006 10:57 PM

This is everything I've eaten today. Superfoods are in blue (duplicates in purple)... a total of 9.. but not an overall good day of eating...

millet with sticky rice and soymilk
fresh orange juice
a little pomegranate juice

lots of water all day

fresh pineapple
then 2 pork ribs
a spoonful of hummus
a glass of wine
a piece of dark chocolate

mandu soup made with mung bean sprouts and cooked with with dduk (a rice flour product) and lots and lots of green onions
