WW apples?

Hey all! I was grocery shopping for the week yesterday at a super Walmart. I went to the fruit sections to get some apples and I was looking at the prices when I picked up this bag. I was looking at the bag when I realized that it had the WW symbol on it! I didn't know WW did apples. LOL

That is weird! It seems like all diets are putting thier brand on different types of food now. Like Oscar Mayer turkey bacon (which is the best turkey bacon EVER) has the South Beach logo on it now. WTH??

mauvaisroux 03-14-2006 09:40 AM

I don't think they actually do apples but the sticker is like "the WW seal of approval"

You're right violet - I've noticed the branding of certain products with certain diets too. In fact there is a whole marketing angle up here from Pepsico that is a "health check" - their products now have a green ball/circle on the packaging to let you know they are healthy choices (not sure if that is just marketing though ;) )

Hmmm... apples approved by WW? Who woulda thunk?

We definitely need that seal on the bag to know they are "okay" to consume. ;)

Thier sticker was on my Bananas as well.

Commercialism. WW is a bussiness afterall ;)

britomart 03-19-2006 10:29 AM

Yeah, I found WW-approved bananas once. I thought maybe if they had a WW sticker they met certain size restrictions -- I'm sure people eat a giant genetically modified apple and figure they're eating a regular small apple sometimes, or a giant twice-as-big-as-it-should-be banana and think they're eating a normal one -- but the bananas I saw were giant. So that didn't make sense. I guess they just want WW people to eat fruit period... which is good.

As I recall WW had a fruit or veggie of the week or month and they give out recipe cards that feature a certain one of them when they are in season. So, obvoiusly, apples are in season.
By the way, try cutting up an applie and sprinkle it with Splenda and a dusting of cinnamon and nutmeg. Cover it with plastic wrap (vented) and micro for about 2 minutes. It's instant comfort food and tastes kind of like warm applie pie. In the morning I have it with oatmeal and feel very satisfied for only 3 points!

toosh - yeah , I know . . . I also found one on my bananas the other week  I didn't realize until I got home from the store and was putting the groceries away.

Mmmmm, that sounds delish! I have to try it!

Yes, as a cosistent WW for over 2 yrs now and a new WW Leader, I can say that I also have seen these WW approved fruits. Linda a/k/a derrydaughter, is correct. WW has certain fruits of the month or the season. This doesn't necessarily mean they are "portion approved."

That green Smart Check thing is on pkgs down here in Fla. too. It's marketing, marketing at an obvious need.

amcap - totally! I watched Oprah yesterday (a repeat show) and the author of French Women Don't Get Fat was a guest. She pointed out that one of the differences in America is that they eat a lot less fruit than the French and consume a lot less food made with fresh ingredients.

Her book also talks about shopping for produce seasonally and using what is available to make meals with. Funny, it seems we are going back to our roots on these things.

I grew with Scottish/Italian families and we never had instant food, canned soups or frozen dinners. Everything was cooked fresh - simple meals but good ingredients.

Oooo, I heard about that book. Has anyone read it?

mauvaisroux 03-23-2006 10:03 AM

Yes, I have a copy. It is not really a diet book. More of a discussion on how to change your mind set/attitude about food and the enjoyment of it and to stop the vicous cycle of restrictive diets and then regaining. She makes a lot of good points and her philosophy on exercise is interesting to.

She provides a lot of tips and tricks that French Women supposedly use as well as providing some slimming recipes - that sound really good. Basically you have to make mindset and lifestyle changes rather than go on a "diet".

She doesn't do gyms either (a woman after my own heart ). But instead she walks to her office, takes the stairs etc. I used to live by a farmer's market in the city where I did all my shopping, walked to work and was on my feet all day and I was at 140lbs for about 7 or 8 years - then I got a desk job, had to take the bus, developed bad eating habits and gained 30 lbs in 2 years :(

Her main point is to eat well, eat fresh food, treat yourself well and don't deprive yourself - enjoy life!

If you are interested then I would recommend picking up the book at Costcos/Sam's Club or getting it out of the library before you decide to buy it.

Oh, thanks! Sounds like my kind of book. :D

Today was a hard day for me...eventhough I have lost 20lbs in great time--I still feel fat....ughhh. I need to keep remembering that it took me awhile to put on all this weight and it will take awhile to get rid of it. I just wish I wouldn't have gotten so big in the first place...today has been a rough day.
