No Breakfast...Setting myself up for failure?

  • So I hear all the time..eat a good breakfast. I am not hungry in the morning. By about 11, I am ravenous, but then it's too close to lunch, so I wait.
I am feeling like I don't want to waste points on my least favorite meal of the day, you know? So I can have a light lunch and a good dinner w/ some wine.
I don't know how to change this terrible habbit
    Is breakfast really that important?
  • If you're a vegan ( ) like me I think you should most definitely be on the Core Plan. It sounds like you're not. I think it is important to eat breakfast because, like you said, you're hungry by noon. I think when skipping meals and feeling hungry during the day your eating habits seem more like a diet, and not a lifestyle. You have to believe it's a lifestyle to succeed.
  • My fear with the core plan is that I already have compulsive over-eating / binging issues. I can't stop myself when I'm "satisfied"...that's how I got where I am I feel like I need the restriction, but I hate the restriction
  • What about not having breakfast, but having a morning snack? Maybe a granola bar or some almonds? Or maybe have a glass of some sort of milk subsititute, or a piece of fruit? Or maybe some carrot sticks and hummus?

You should eat when you are hungry, even if it's only a few hours before lunch. You don't have to eat a full 4 course meal, but have a little snack. A grumbling tummy won't keep you productive at work or school.
  • I will say this eating something within an hour or so of getting up helps get the metabolism moving for the day and thus inturn helps you lose weight. Even if it is something small that has calories in it..say juice or a piece of fruit...however this may because it is not a protient or complex carb may make you hungrier in a short time. HOw about a piece of fruit with a dairy (milk or yogurt or cheese).
  • Thanks for all the ideas guys...it just feels so overwhelming. Such a huge task ahead of me and only so many points to do it in
  • How many points are you dealing with? Would you consider lowering the wine? Or maybe doing a wine spritzer or something? In the long run it's not really healthy to skip eating food when you're hungry in order to have an extra glass of wine with dinner.

    morning snack:
    2 points for oatmeal

    lunch:
    0 points for salad
3 points for protein in salad
1 point for some sort of fruit
2-5 points for some sort of starchy thing, like rice or bread if you need that sort of thing to feel full

    afternoon snack:
    2-3 points for nuts/protein

    dinner:
so far 10-14 points used, so you have a decent amount of wiggle room for dinner if you make wise choices. Add more veggies to dinner to give you more to eat for fewer points. It's doable.

Can you post some an example of a typical day for you, food wise?
  • I feel the same way about breakfast. I hate to waste my points on it but I have to. If I don't eat something, I am so hungry by the time its lunch, I tend to feel like its Ok to eat a lot then. which technically it is because i have the points but I shouldn't let my self get so hungry...catch 22 kind of thing...
Anyway, her is what I ussually do, I will eat a 2 pt breakfast bar or have a small bowl of cereal for 3 pts and a piece of fuit. I ussually spend between 3-5 points. Then I have a 6-8 point lunch, large salad, w/ homemade dressing, protein, and a little carb something. Then I can have a small snack and still a 10-12 pt dinner. does that add up? not sure but try and at least eat a 2 pt snack even if it is around 10 or 11. When I balance my meal and eat every couple of hours, I tend to lose more easily and feel less deprived. But you have to figure out what will work best for you.
  • I can't stand missing breakfast, but I also didn't want to "waste" points on breakfast, so here are some of my breakfast solutions.

    1 medium grapefruit = 1 point
"All-Bran" breakfast bars = 2 points (Honey nut is my fave flavor)
Quaker has come out with a new reduced sugar oatmeal = 2 points per pack
    1/2 banana cut into 1/2 cup of 1% milk = 2 points
1 egg = 2 points (spice with chili or salsa ; and boil, don't fry or scramble)

With one of these things, I don't end up with an urge to snack all morning, but there are still lots of points left for the rest of the day.
  • I have never been a breakfast eater either . But now I look forward to my fruit and yogurt or allbran cereal, milk & banana or this morn I tried the AllBran Bars (very good) and a small container of non fat yogurt.

I really believe that skipping meals tends to slow our metabolism down as our bodies feel like we are starving them (poor things)

Good Luck and I am sure you will figure out a solution that will work for you
