Dairy Servings Question
 
Hi all. I was looking through my WW "Getting Started" book today, and I found a piece of *disturbing* info. The book says that 2 cups of Cottage cheese counts as 1 dairy serving. But, it says that 1/2 cup ricotta counts as one also. Is this wrong, am I reading it wrong, or have I just been really, really wrong this whole time? I thought that when the container of cottage cheese says 1/2 cup = a serving, that it really was a dairy serving. Can any one explian this to me?

On that same track, how many points do you usually "spend" on your dairy servings?

No you are correct 1 /2 cup ricotta or 2 cups of cottage cheese is 1 dairy serving. It is based on getting the full nutritional value of 1 cup of milk (calcium, protein, etc) that is based on FDA/USDA Food Pyramid servings.

The serving on the container is only for the caloric and nutritional value on the label.

I spend 4-6 points on dairy (usually 2 on a cup of milk with my cereal or 1 cup yogurt in my smoothie for breakfast; 1 cup of yogurt a lunch and sometimes 1 point worth of cheese on my sandwich with lunch).

Thanks Kelly. I dont know why I never saw that in my book...I guess I need to look more closley! I sure wish that cottage cheese was less points...I eat about 4 points worth a day (1 cup), but I cant "spend" 8 points on it to get just 1 serving of dairy. Oh, well. Back to yogurt I guess. :p Thanks again for the info!

So have 1 cup and count it for 1/2 of your dairy serving, then have 1/2 a cup of yogurt or milk for another point which would make your whole serving. Nothing says you can't break up the servings into 1/2 servings, etc.

I used to do 6 oz of Dannon or Yoplait yogurt (3/4 serving) + 14 gms of cheese (1/3 of a serving) for a whole serving.
