Help, Really Discouraged

  • I have been on WW since the week before Thanksgiving, did great over the holidays and actually the last week I have lost any thing was the week of New Years!
I then started to exercise at least 3 days a week.
What is going on. I feel like crying -- actually I have.
I don't want to quit the program and have followed it to a T, I journal stay within my points -- everything.
What can I do to boost my self just to lose a pound???
I am in the St. Patty's challenge and I am afraid I will be the Big loser by gaining the goal that I wanted to lose.

    HELP!!!

  • First of all Jilly's Mom,
    Stop beating yourself up.
Second, Take a look at the points, are you eating the MIN. the MAX or right in the middle. Are you getting enough fiber and good protien, complex carbs.all of these things help to loose and feel good. Do you eat breakfast, or are you waitting till lunch. All this can take a toll on the metabolizm. (Your body shuts down at night, breakfast tells your body you are going to feed it for the day and it can start burnning)
As the mother of 2 kids (little) I know this is hard, But you have to move everyday. I usually exercise at night after the kids have gone to bed. Doesn't have to me much. 15 Min sit ups, push ups leg lifs, that kind of stuff. A video or even a trip to the gym if you can.
I want you to succeed for you and to feel good for you. It is the best gift you can give your kids.

Be nice to yourself, don't quit, the weight deffinately won't go away if you quit.

  • Jillys Mom,
Pull up the thread on breaking a plateau. Do something different. Have you taken measurements to see if inches are coming off because some people say that when the inches drop, the scale stays the same.
I have had the same frustration and find the connection with me is hormonal and I just finally dropped another couple pounds.
Look through your journals, double check what you were doing when you were losing weight, and most of all, have faith because you know this works. Shake up your eating habits--more protein, less vegetables, etc.--shake it up to see if you can't nudge your body to release some more fat.
Good luck. I know how miserable this can feel.
  • Hi,

You said that you stopped losing after you started exercising 3 days a week. That's actually quite common. You're building up muscle tissue and it takes more calories for your body to maintain muscle than to maintain fat tissue, so some of your lost fat is going to maintain those new muscles.

Take your measurements. Look in the mirror. You may see smaller inches and look better in your clothes without actually seeing a loss on the scale. Hang in there. You're doing great. Especially since the current wisdom in the medical community seems to think that exercise is the most important part of any healthy lifestyle.

  • Thanks guys for all the support. I have been dividing up the points like they say to do in the Perfect Balance book(???) nothing happened. I have lost inches. 4 in my waist and 4.5 in my hips.
This past week we ate out every night. I did count my points but didn't eat correctly as in fruits, veggies, etc, but DID drink the water.
My 35th B-day was Tues so guess what I ate
the cake!!! And kept eating bites all day Wed. Well guess what -- today I was down 1.5 lbs. Now explain that!!!

I usually eat 2 pieces of FF toast with peanut butter for breakfast and then get my veggies, fruits, carbs and protein in the rest of the day.
Here is a thought, with the exercise maybe I wasn't eating enough. I didn't always count my exercise points I had earned but also wasn't hungry at any point either.
I tried the Plateau tips and didn't have any luck, but I WILL NOT GIVE UP!!!

Again thanks for all the support.
    Hugs to you all

  • I'm glad you're not giving up!

Sometimes muscles hold onto water after they've been exercised, so make sure you keep drinking plenty of water.

Also, I find that I lose better if I eat about 2 of every 3 exercise points I earn. Perhaps your body will react differently at a different point in your range.
  • never exercised and now I am but no loss
Hi all - have been reading everyones imput and you all sound so informed. I have been dieting my whole life and I feel I don't know a thing. I am following the original 123 plan because then I had gone to the meetings. Do you think I should go to a meeting just for them to explain this new 123 plan is it that different. I have just been counting my points and lost the first 3 weeks. Nothing this week. However, I have been really exercising on my new latest find and love it to death now is this going to slow the weight loss. My husband keeps saying he sees how much weight I am losing but the scales have not moved. Should I just do what I have been doing? Any suggestons. lolo
  • Wow!
You've lost 4 inches from your waist? That's wonderful! I'm very impressed. It definitely sounds like you're whittling down fat. The scale is NOT a reliable barometer, especially when you start exercising. It takes the body 6-8 weeks to become efficient at burning fat while doing exercise. Weird, but true. Stick with it. In spite of what the scales say, you're really doing wonderfully.

First of all, keep on program. Don't get discouraged! I know it is a lot easier to say then to do. If you are in a plateau, you might want to shake up your points. One day eat the maximum, the next day the minimum. If you are exercising a lot, you may actually need to raise your points to lose weight. Your body is made to retain fat the best that it can, for times of starvation. If you are exercising a lot and eating low on your points, your body may be interpreting this as starvation and it will lower your thermostat to compensate. I wouldn't recommend quitting the exercise, it is too good for you, instead eat more points. Use some if not all of the points you earn from the exercise. Also drink ALL your water. In fact, I would not stay at the minimum for water, which is 48 oz a day. I would drink AT LEAST 64 oz, and probably more. Stay on program and the weight will come off eventually!
