Valuable Lesson Learned!
Hi all,
Just wanted to share what i experienced while away on a ski weekend in NH this past weekend with 3 other couples. I set into the weekend knowing i was going to follow the plan the best i could. I packed up my fruit and veggies from home and anything else i may need. So i thought i was doing ok, wrote down everything to track when i got home. Mind you i left Friday at 196 and came home 202  I almost died on the floor! I knew i did have salty foods and yes, i did have some things i normally wouldn't eat like some cashews and m&m's but i calculated them into my daily/weeklies. So i drank water like crazy yesterday, felt sooooo gross and bloated and when i weighed myself this morning was back down to 198, still need to drop those 2 other lbs. BUT my lesson to myself is that i can't eat even a little like others splurge while away because i gain weight easily AND it's just not worth it!!! I'm wondering, do other's have this same issue where they need to stay on the straight and narrow more often than not? |
read mandalyn's (sorry spelled that wrong) post about traveling. she gives lots of great tips about planning ahead, packing your own food, how she gets in a w/o on business trips and so on.

I have the same issue! During the summer we went camping and I stayed on track, walked 3 miles a day only to come home to a 5lb gain. I was angry but I kept pushing on and it took 2 weeks to lose the 5lbs I gained. The important thing is you didn't give up and your gain is probably due to water retention from the salty foods.

It sounds like you tried really hard to stay on plan, so don't over-look your hard work and effort that took! Being 'mindful' is half the battle, so it sounds like you did something very sustainable during that trip---lived your life as close to plan as you could!
Also, traveling often causes water-weight issues and at least for me, digestion is usually off for a couple days, so you may very well lose those other 2 lbs pretty quickly! I think you should be really proud of yourself for doing such a good job on vacation---I have a big trip coming up next week, and I'm so nervous to go back to my old stomping grounds (phoenix), where I know where all the good food is! And I know I'm going to want to splurge on all my old favorites, but I must find a way to incorporate them healthfully! I think you showed me that it IS possible on vacation:) |
Were you skiing? Your muscles might be retaining water from the work they did getting you down the mountain.
I had a winter hiking & XC ski weekend. I ate for fuel, not weight loss, and came home to a couple of pound gain. But you know what, I had an amazing time, my legs are sore and achey which means they worked hard this weekend, and I'm back on track today. I wouldn't trade that chocolate bar and the almond butter sandwich for anything - that fueled me, my snow shoes and my pack 4000' feet up a mountain! |
Actually i didn't ski but it dawned on me i'm not used to eating dinners that we had prepared for us. I had spiral ham which i'm sure was loaded with sodium. I have taken a water pill yesterday and today to get rid of the bloat in my hands!
Seagirl, that's GREAT! Sounds like alot of fun, looks like we are in the similar area! |
Ahh, NH! I moved away from the northeast 6 months ago (I was a lifer) and I miss it! But I digress. I have the same experience... gain weight VERY easily. I'm somewhat sensitive to high-sodium foods, I think. When I gulp water like it's going out of style, most of it leaves within a few days, but it sure is discouraging!
I also can't use all of my weeklies or I'll gain. Granted, I even went over my weeklies this week- but going over by 10 or so shouldn't make me gain 3-4 pounds, sooo that tells me I should probably only use half. |
Maybe next time add in some Cross country skiing or snow shoeing to burn calories all day before indulging at night.

I'm happy to report that as of this morning i'm back down to the exact (to the ounce) weight i was going to weigh in last Friday morning. Hoping to lose between now and Sat morning! I need out of these 190s!!!!
