Hummus

Hi Everyone!

I'm super addicted to Hummus and recently bought the individual cups because I can't handle having an entire tub of it in my house. I tend to eat the entire thing and the points definately add up! The individual cups are 4 points each and I was wondering if anyone knows how to make their own low fat version? OR has anyone seen a lower fat version in the store?

Ditto. I make my own just using chick peas, lemon juice, sesame seeds, garlic and fresh red pepper. Leaving out the tahini makes it taste less like hummus, but it eliminates a lot of calories and fat. The key is finding really good chick peas that have a lot a flavor - not always easy.

Thanks! Do you put everything in the blender or food proccessor? I have a can of Progresso Chick Peas, what kind do you use? I could seriously eat this stuff ALL day!

I just discovered this stuff and decided to try it because it said low calories on the lid. I got the garlic flavor one. Now what do I eat it with? I stood in the isle and checked every box of crackers but they were all way too high in calories. So what should I put it on?

I usually slice a red pepper or carrots and dip them in it :)

I use baby carrots, slices of raw peppers, mushrooms, grape tomatoes, or if I want something starchy I use Wasa light http://us.wasa.com/health-food.aspx or Akmak http://www.akmakbakeries.com/wholeofthewheat.html.

I tend to make sandwiches and use hummus as a spread with sprouts, roasted red peppers, and baby spinach or even with chicken instead of mayo.

The grocery store I shop at makes its own brand of low-fat hummus. It's not with the other brands of hummus though, its by the cheese and other dips and things they make specifically for Giant Eagle. You might check in that section?

Hummus is so full of good things that are filling that I don't worry about the cost - it's points well spent, IMO. I do make my own with the recipe from the Sonoma diet book. It has a can of garbanzo beans (drained), 1/4 cup tahini, 3 T water, 2T lemon juice, 1T olive oil, and then seasonings. I eat it on a healthy tortilla with LF Italian cheese blend (about 1T) and lots of fresh spinach leaves. A very filling meal.

Hummus is great with whole grain pita bread, warmed and sliced into triangles. My husband uses it in place of mayonnaise in his lunch sandwiches.

Kim, I just read your other post about the Halloween candy and now this one.
Sounds like you have a problem with out of control binge eating?
I'm not expert but I would have a chat with my WW leader about things you can do to help. I would also still continue to have individual serving sizes of items in your home, that helps.
Also, you need to do certain things to signify the end of a meal or snack. Portion out the serving size of something at the counter before you sit down with it, always, and PUT THE REST AWAY!
Also, I will often pop a piece of bubble gum in my mouth when the table is cleared, having that change of taste gives me that loud and clear message that mealtie is over helps. I will often go an brush my teeth when I am craving sweets and then drink a big glass of water afterwards. Often, what I am is just plain bored and the sweet taste of that strong toothpaste does change up things quite a bit. Plus, the bonus is that your teeth are cleaner too. But, be gentle on your enamel. : )
I wish you the best.

i luuuuuv hummus too! but when i'm counting strict calories, it's awfully hard ot work it in. because of the calories in the oil and beans in it. at least it's a healthy oil. the only way to keep to calories is to measure how much you eat of it, and stop there. suxxx, i know:( unless you swap it for some other food item.

I also love hummous. I was reading something today in Fitness magazine about a lower fat version of hummous that just came out on the market. I'll get the magazine back tomorrow and let you know all about it!
