I've learned to do without.... I can't live without....

I love the WW plan because it is truly a lifestyle change and not just a diet. My favorite part is being able to eat regular food, just making wiser choices and watching my portion. I did WW a few years ago with great success. Then life happened and I gained it all back, plus some. I have been back on for about a month or so and I thought it would be fun to list foods we have learned we can do without since starting WW and foods we still indulge in.

I have learned that I can do without butter, cheese, and white bread. While I still LOVE all of them (esp white bread), I find that they are just not worth the points to me.

On the flip side, something I cannot do without and will not substitute is CHOCOLATE!!! I love chocolate so much. I have definitely cut way back but every couple of days I save some points just for my sweet tooth.

Anyone else?

LosinitinCO 05-03-2010 04:35 PM

This is fun! It was actually a lot harder to come up with my list than I thought it would be! I have been doing WW for 3 weeks, and completely agree, it is a LIFESTYLE change not a diet. I am allowed to enjoy my life and family, and lose weight What a concept! ;)

So far in my journey, I have discovered that:

I can do without: white bread & white products (pasta), butter, potatoes, pastries, and soda. I have not even missed them (except french fries, they are a potato!).

I can not live without: ice cream/dessert- thank you WW for all the ice cream and cake selection it is the only way I have survived!, popcorn, grilled corn on the cob, baked beans, and fresh fruit. I tried South Beach before WW and they limited your fruit intake. Anyone notice a BBQ theme in my foods?? Must be summer!

1bighog: Happy belated birthday! CONGRATULATIONS on wearing a size 10!! Keep up the great work!! :carrot:

Good luck to all!

Thanks!

I can't live without rice but I've learned to do without so much of it. I've gone from at least 2 cups w/ every meal to 1 or less. It's still pretty hard, but I'm learning the values of other side-dishes.

I've actually eaten more chocolate since I've started WW than when I wasn't, go figure.

1bighog 05-05-2010 05:04 PM

Ooh, rice! I love rice! I don't make it nearly as often, but when I do I tend to eat much more than a portion. As I like to tell my friends--I'm Korean; I don't eat chicken with rice, I eat rice with chicken!

paularose1969 05-05-2010 08:57 PM

I can live without: anything fried.

I cannot live without: Laughing Cow Cheese Lite, Wasa Crackers, Fruits & Vegetables, & Chocolate.

I have not cut any food out of my life. I do cook it differently and watch the portion size.

I am only about a week in - but this topic is interesting.

I realized just tonight that I can live without butter.

We had a "breakfast for dinner" night tonight at home. I was resigned to my one slice of toast (w/butter) and one over-medium egg - when for some reason I checked the bacon label.....:D

I had 2 slices of bacon and skipped the butter on my toast - oh yeah :) (Can you believe there is more fat/cals in butter than bacon??????)

I also used off-brand spray to keep my egg from sticking vs butter.

I am trying to figure out how I will/ if I can - live without mayo.

It might be one of my must haves just because I cannot get down with mustard lol

LosinitinCO 05-10-2010 05:07 PM

I absolutely cannot live without mayo! I am trying to give the low fat version a shot, but I will always reserve Points for mayo! LOL

jcurran23 05-11-2010 12:37 PM

for you butter and mayo lovers...brummel & brown natural yogurt butter is only 1 pt per serving and I think it's way better than regular butter, I actually use so little of it on toast sometimes I dont even count it. Kraft free mayo is no points and its pretty good too.

InkCreative 05-12-2010 12:33 PM

I can live without all those potato chips! I don't even crave them any more. They're not really filling and they aren't my favorite food. I can also live without chicken nuggets. If I have to eat chicken, I'd rather eat regular chicken. I leave the nuggets for the kiddos.

I can't live without a piece of chocolate after every meal. :) If I don't, I feel like I'm missing something. So I save at least a point for at least a couple of Hersey's Kisses or whatever 1 point of chocolate turns out to be.

As mentioned, I don't cut out anything, but there's certain things I just don't pick up, even if they're sitting on the counter.

texscrapper 05-19-2010 08:36 PM

I can live without fried foods, eggs (switched to egg beaters), and whole milk

I can not live without cheese - the full fat kind :D FF cheese just doesn't cut it for me - I'd rather have less of it instead of sacraficing taste! I also LOVE Ronzoni Pasta - it cures my carb/pasta fix and it is not whole wheat :T

I really am not giving upo much, just changing how much I eat and how I prepare it.

huntress 05-23-2010 09:44 AM

I can live without: fried foods, butter and mayo

I cannot live without: ice cream, so now I just have skinny cows or WW treats. There's a conveniece store by my office that sells the skinny cow ice cream sandwiches individually which I love because then I only have to buy them one at a time when I really want one. Wish more places would do that.

saef 05-23-2010 10:42 AM

I've learned to live without: Spaghetti with sauce & meatballs, pizza, fried chicken, Italian bread, dinner rolls

I can't live without: Nonfat yogurt, occasional bit of goat cheese, my own home-made whole wheat bread, occasional bit of dried fruit

jesi74 05-31-2010 03:26 PM

Never thought about this really the last time I was on WW.
Starting again today, thinking about this question...

I know I can do without the large portion, of anything.
Thats really what its about right? Eating anything you want, in a small amount.
What I think I will have issues with? Several things come to mind...
Pizza, a few fried foods, and having to track every move I make LOL
I'm sure once i'm in it for a while, this will change :)

susanwmsrn 06-01-2010 03:42 PM

the hardest thing for me is to give up the weekend margaritas....i have had few lately...woke up the next day with a 4 pound gain! took over week to come off....
i also had to give up bagels...

GlamourGirl827 06-07-2010 09:35 AM

I found I can do without things like butter, mayo, creamy dressings, croutons...the kind of things that are too many points for so little, and really don't help fill me up.
However, I still have points set a side for a serving of ice cream after dinner.
I just got back on plan yesterday after my second son was born, but I've been on weight watchers in the past. Its the only "diet" though it more of a lifestyle change, that works for me!

vesperpt 06-10-2010 12:30 PM

Mayo, any salad dressings, dips. Actually most condiments that go on a sandwich! I dont care about things like pizza and wings (which my boyfriend and I pretty much lived on for a while there), coca cola.

I couldnt do without my little low fat yogurts I snack on, chicken breasts, and I always save room for a 1 pt fruit popsicle!

Slim CB 06-10-2010 12:46 PM

I am a foodie....I love food. I cant live without any food items. The only thing is that I am not a chocolate lover and as such I dont eat it often. My key to weight loss....portion control. I am from the Caribbean and we tend to eat heavily but I have learnt to eat as little as 1/2 cup of rice with 1 pc of chicken with my veggies for dinner/supper. I have learnt to eat those Klondike Slim-A-Bear 100 calories ice cream treat. I have learnt to limit myself to 1/2 can of a small Pringles can (that works out to 105 calories).

Sorry guys....cant do without my food :-). Seems its working too...down 8lbs and 6.75" in 3 weeks!

trooworld 06-17-2010 12:59 PM

Slim CB, I am right there with you...I don't do without too many things, I find a way to fit in most of anything I want. I do try to stay away from chips because I have a serious problem with them and like the Pringles slogan "I betcha can't eat just one." It's just too damaging. And I don't think the 100-cal packs are worth the 3 pts, I can get so much more flavor for those 3 pts. So, I guess I have learned that I can live (most of the time) without chips.

As far as my must haves: whole wheat pasta, berries, bagel thins, Claussen dill pickles, nonfat plain yogurt, Splenda, COFFEE (but I knew that all along ;) ).

BeTrueToYou 06-17-2010 11:58 PM

:)

I have learned that I can live without most of everything I was eating before. Literally. For a long while I was pretty much living off of fast food, and I never would have thought it possible, but I have zero interest in it anymore. As a kid I remember thinking, "I can't wait to grow up, then I can eat all I want and no one can tell me what to do". Obviously I had food control issues, I was overweight then, and now. But the point is that I don't even want it anymore.

One thing I can't live without is probably ice cream. I love it, adore it, and will probably always eat it. Some days I eat 4 points worth of ice cream. I eat the weight watchers ones, because they taste good to me, satisfy my craving, and don't make me feel like I am overdoing anything. I also LOVE fruit. Any kind, sometimes I have to be careful because I could literally eat my entire days worth of points in fruit (and some days I do!).

I think the most interesting thing for me is that I am finally able to see this as a life style change. There isn't a single thing I tell myself that I CAN'T have. I just decide whether or not it is worth the points I will have to spend. Most of the time, there is an alternative that is fewer points and equally, if not more so, satisfying.

I've learned to live without potato chips and condiments

I cannot live without queso and chips! I've been exploring low/no fat options, and nothing comes close. I'll settle for saving up for it, or having it in small portions :)

Yes! You are right; it's about portion control. That's what I love about WW. If I want a Pepsi, I am going to have a freaking Pepsi, man! :carrot: Just need to count the points. However, there are some things now, where I think, "Yeah, that's not worth 4 points to me," so I'll skip over it.

corgiXpaws 07-03-2010 11:31 PM

In the last month I've learned I can live without:

-Italian Herb & Cheese bread at Subway. Okay, silly, yeah... but subway is a twice a week thing for me, and I LOVE my bread. I settle for wheat now. I also now do without the cheese and mayo.
-Smothering everything in cheese.
-Beef Chili (actually starting to prefer chicken chili)
-Cake
-soda

I can't live without:
-fruit juice, though I've switched to "light" juices instead.
-Ice cream. But the WW and Skinny Cows have replaced Ben & Jerrys
-Chili, I WILL have it once a week, always.
-Avacado/ guacamole
-Subway
-french fries
-ravioli

HoosierHeather 07-06-2010 03:52 PM

I can't live without real (whole, raw) milk (2pts more per serving than skim, but I feel so much fuller/satisfied); regular cheese (can't stomach the fat free, ick); and REAL mayonnaise. I don't eat a lot of these foods (one cup of milk every day, cheese and may maybe 2x per week) so we're not talking a huge difference in points. But if I do use skim milk, for example, I want to eat more cereal than if I use the real milk.

I can, however, do without cheeseburgers, french fries, and sugar sodas. I have come to realize that when I do indulge in these things, I feel like CRAP! So not worth the momentary tastiness!

Yes! I do LOVE cheeseburgers, fries, and sugary sodas  so I'll treat myself now and then, but every time I do I feel sick afterward. Too much grease since my body has adjusted to healthier eating.

Sheena41 07-07-2010 09:22 PM

I can live without Doritos and cookies. I can't live without baked chips, chocolate and my favorite low point cereal.

RunningToSmile 07-10-2010 03:54 PM

I can live without most alcoholic drinks (too many points, and haven't missed them at all), butter, pasta, and pizza.

I can't live without carefully measured regular mayo, chocolate, and something sweet after supper.

R :)

maryz 07-12-2010 02:21 PM

I've actually eaten more chocolate since I've started WW than when I wasn't, go figure.

bannabanana 07-12-2010 02:42 PM

I have figured out that I can live without chocolate (I know I am in the minority here), butter, and chips. I never did eat too much white bread, pasta, rice, etc. That's not really my thing.

I cannot live without cheese. Plain and simple. I am so thankful for Weight Watchers cream cheese and 2% Cracker Barrel Sharp Cheddar. I also cannot live without coffee- thank God it is zero points. :)

bannabanana 07-12-2010 02:43 PM

Oh, also, I cannot live without a light beer or a glass of wine or two on the weekends. That's what I use the extra points on! But only on the weekends, or special occasions.
