Thinking about starting weight watchers at home but had a few questions

  • Good Morning All

I am thinking about starting the weight watchers at home and I did find some really good deals on ebay for the starter kit but I am trying to decide if I need to buy it. So my first question is do you have the starter kit and does it actually help you? Also what do you guys find most on your grocery list I have no idea what kinds of things to buy. I'm thinking low fat things and veggies?? Right now I have a ton of junk in my house because my boyfriend is trying to do everything he can to gain weight lol. I am trying to lose a total of 20lbs and use WW to maintain after I lose but it's been so hard to lose weight since I had my daughter (she mine months now). Any help you can give me would be truly appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Are you planning to do it online? If so the info you need will be available on the website. If not then I would say you need a kit to learn the program, you will need to know how many points you get each day.I am a lifetime member and the program works...if you work the program.I fell off for 3 years and have gained my weight back so I am just restarting.
You can eat anything thing you want on program but each food is assigned a point value. You will learn pretty quick how far your points will go based on healthier choices.
The WW website message boards are free to anyone. You can find lots of great recipes and tips there.I personally hang on the Recipe Review board.Good luck with your journey. If you need any help feel free to ask anytime.
  • yeah, you pretty much need the information they give you if you are first starting out.

I too recommend the WW message boards. They have a newbie section that's very good.

  • So are you debating between getting a kit or just getting the information off the web, right? That's how I read your question, so I could be totally off on the rest of this.

If you are doing it without meetings, I recommend eTools for the first month or so to learn the points values of things you are eating, though you could just get a book that lists them. I just like the online part because I could put the actual weights in (say 4.5 oz of chicken instead of the serving size of 3 oz, so I don't just estimate the points). You are going to need the basic information, like the formula, a foods list, and probably a points calculator, at the least, and some way of tracking what you eat daily.

I am horrible when it comes to using calendars, but some swear by them. So I am basically just using a purse-sized spiral notebook to track daily and carry my points slider and foods list with me.

I dunno if any of this helps, but I congrat you on doing your research before jumping in!
  • As far as your grocery list goes....the professionals always tell you to stick to the perimeter of the grocery store...the less up and down the isles the better. Most of the fresh fruits, veggies, dairy and meat are around the outside of the stores. There are all sorts of zero, 1 & 2 point foods. You'll find this out when you decide which tools you are goind to use. The more fresh foods, the better.
  • Zanheltangia- Yes that’s exactly what I mean I am debating if I am going to buy the starter kit or just find information online. I am going to get the starter kit when I get the cash but I found out how many points I would get per day and how to calculate the points in foods. I also have a mini notebook for my purse to track everything that I eat so I am hoping this will work out for now. I am roughly starting today so I hope the information I found is correct but I am hoping to order the kit by next week. Thanks so much for all the responses and look forward to chatting with you ladies throughout this journey.
  • Do you know the 9 healthy guidelines you have to get in every day? Do you know how to calculate APs, how maintenance works? Just knowing points is not enough. You are not doing WW if you don't have the information to follow it correctly.
  • I am using the online WW and find it very helpful. I did order the WW at home basic kit so I could have a book in the kitchen instead of having to look everything up each time.
  • QuilterInVA – Thanks for the reply but no I am not aware of any of that stuff that’s why I said I am doing a “rough” version and hoping to buy the starter kit very soon. I never said I was looking to follow 100% right now and I was looking for opinions so that’s why I came here to ask for them. If I had the money right now I would have signed up a week ago but I don’t so I am trying to do what I can!
  • I love weight watchers, I especially like going to the meetings. But in your case I understand how with money being short you need to cut corners. There is alot of good information available so that you can get started off of the net. I, like most that have posted would join when you can afford to. One of the post I felt was very insightful was that when you shop be sure and grocery shop on the outside aisles of the grocery store. I mentioned to my husband just last week that since starting weight watchers I never venture into the other aisles. Good luck and remember we are all in this together.
