I Have Been Just Diagnosed With Type II

  • Hello,
I posted this on another group, but was wondering if anyone here has Type II diabetes on Weight Watchers?

How are you doing with weight loss?
How are you doing this plan with your Type II diabetes?

I joined Weight Watchers last Tuesday and found out on Wednesday after a physical that I have diabetes.

I go to my first diabetes class on June 9th as that is the first day they had open.

Any advice or help would be so appreciated as I am just getting over the shock of having Type II diabetes

    Thank you so much,
    Melanie in Colorado
  • Hi Melanie,
So sorry about your diagnosis! The good news is, diabetes can be managed in many cases with diet and exercise. I don't have it, and am not a doctor, but know lots of people that do have diabetes, and have been amazed at what changes they see after making changes in their lifestyle. If you follow the Weight Watcher Good Health Guidelines. which includes regular, daily exercise, and the program outline in general, I think you'll see an improvement right away.

Keep in touch and let us know how it's going.
  • Jane,
Thank you for answering. I am going to do as you say. Even though I did my first weigh in last Tuesday for the first time, I am just starting now, due to the fact we had to go grocery shopping and to work on low glycemic foods it took a lot to do, but I am going to fight this with all I have.

  • Melanie,

That's the spirit! Some people say to pay attention to the glycemic load as well as glycemic index of foods. Now that you have the resources to make this work, you're on the road to success, not only with managing your diabetes, but in weight loss and self esteem as well! You used the term WE, so I take it that you have a support system in your corner, right? Counting all the people here who will help support you, and give you encouragement, you're covered!
why not hop around the WW forum, and see if there is a group that you'd like to join? Let me or someone know if you need anything.
  • I do not know much about diabetes, so I am unsure of what to say, but I do wish you the best of luck & I hope you keep us updated. Good luck with your weight loss & I am sure you will be just fine!
  • Hi Melsie and welcome! As you I'm a type II and I'm doing WW. Although their program is not specifically for diabetics for me the portion control and discipline has worked just fine. I now have an idea on how to play with the carbohydrates and keep those numbers low (unless I cheat ). Also including exercise in my lifestyle has helped me get even better numbers. I've been able to loose 10 pounds, I think the only difference is that I'm not taking any medication so I'm not sure if that would affect your weight loss. But don't worry you have come to the right place...The ladies in here are really knowledgeable and kind, I'm sure they would help you.

    Chat with you later!
  • Hi Melanie,

I would like to know how you are doing.
Three years ago I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and put on metformin, 1000 mg, twice a day. And yes, I weighed 230 lbs. That was the moment to change my lifestyle. I went on a very low-carb diet, added a lot of supplements (after having read Jack Challem's book on symptom X) and, of course, some exercise. In the following 2 years I lost 88 lbs and got rid of the metformin.
Unfortunately the low-carb diet is not for me in the long run and I gained back half of the weight I had lost and, after another 2 years, my doctor told me that he might have to put me on metformin again. Another lifestyle change was due and this time it was weight watchers. I don't lose weight as fast as with low-carb, but I don't have the cravings and side-effects, like muscle cramps and sleepless nights with low energy during the day, but I am losing, slowly and steadily. And, best of all, my bloodsugar is down again. Doc says it is the weight-loss. I wish you luck. Just stick to this sensible diet and things will improve!

    Best regards
