Quitting WW
I've canceled my membership (I was on monthly pass) so I'll keep going for 2 more weeks that I've prepaid for, but that's all. I really need the $40/month for lots of little reasons that have just accumulated over the summer - the biggest being that my DH, who is a professor, did NOT get a raise this year (no one did), and they cut two of the 4 summer courses he was supposed to be teaching, so we've been dipping into our savings all summer, and need to really tighten our budget.
Has anyone 'successfully quit'? That sounds dumb :) I know... I'm going to continue tracking on my own, and turn to all of you here for support & encouragement. I hope I can continue to lose on my own. |
*raises hand*
Just keep coming back here as often as you can :) Stay committed!! I now calorie count though (if WW would make a cool iphone app I'm there) but did lose the majority of my weight on WW! |
Good luck. Just consider this place to be your new meetings! Honestly I've never successfully quit, but then again, I'm here because I've never successfully done any of it long term. I'm sure you can make it. We are here for you.
|
I have done WW as well as many other diets and was successful but decided I didn't wan't to pay someone to tell me what to eat. I now am a calorie counter which works well for me. I like it's flexibility and it is FREE!!!!
|
They don't really tell you what to eat unless you were on Core ;) They do try to help you make healthy food choices by showing you different options.
|
Thanks for the replies. It helps to hear others have gone renegade with some success. ;)
I find any kind of counting (calorie, point, whatever) cumbersome, but I do prefer the layout of fitday to the WW etools. l like having my calories broken into a pie chart so I can see % fat, protein, and carbs, and also how it tells me if I'm falling short on certain nutrients. But I do like the activity points I can earn on WW! |
i quit going to ww meetings, and continue to do it at home. i havent lost much i know, but it does seem to be working for me. i didnt find the meetings all that helpful once i understood the programme!
|
Hi again.....I actually ordered the ww at home kit and I have been doing it on my own. I just couldn't afford the meetings and couldn't really find the time to go anyway. This is my 6th week and I have lost almost 15 pounds.....so I feel like it is working pretty well for me.
You have been going to the meetings, so you have all the tools to keep on doing it. And you can find support here! In fact there is a great WW at Home group on here too. :) All that to say that you absolutely can do it on your own. Well.....on your own with all of us here to support you!!:D |
I had the same stuggle too. I really needed the 40 dollars a month, so I quit paying for it but im still following the plan. I went to the WW near me and bought another 3 month journal, i still do everything i was doing without the meeting and e-tools. ive been really successful without the meetings..but tracking is most important. i think you should stay on the WW plan because i think its easiest to follow and your familar with it. just go to your local ww and buy the 3 month journal for 7 dollars and journalize and continue everything you've been doing!
|
My 3 month journals are more like $10! I must be getting ripped off. :)
Seriously though, i am going to WI tomorrow and I'm going to buy the food scale, the points calculator, and another 3 month journal (I just finished filling mine up last week) and do it on my own for awhile. If I go below 1lb/week loss I will have to find a way to pay for meetings, but I am definitely going to give it a go. Thanks so much for the support! |
You aren't quitting WW, when you think about it. You just aren't going to the meetings. Nothing so unusal about that! Which is why this thread/forum is here! You have the info, just keep kicking butt! And use this forum for support -- you'll get lots on the WW at home thread here, too. Cause you aren't alone...
:D Kira |
I stopped going to WW last year, and while I have not really lost any more weight, I have not gained any either.
|
I think its really possible to do weight watchers without paying. I just started and got lots of info on points and how they are calculated from a friend and so far its going great and I havent paid any out of pocket money.
|
i quit weight watchers and lost about 14 pounds after i quit and gained tons of money i saved from not going to meetings.
|
I just need the accountability of someone else weighing me in

I'm going to give it a month (September, since I've paid for August already) and if I don't lose 4+lbs doing it on my own, I'll go back in October. I do need to choose one weigh in day and stick to that, though. I guess I could keep the same day I normally would go to WW. |
alternative "weigh-in" solution
You can always check and see if there is a TOPS group in your area. You can find them online...just search in google for "take off pounds sensibly". (I haven't posted enough yet for it to allow me to include the link). It's similar to weight watchers as far as support goes, you meet weekly and weigh-in and have a program. You can use whatever diet you like, they do have an exchange program they can teach you--but most in the TOPS group I attended actually used WW points. It is an international organization and you get a magazine every 2 months, etc. Yearly dues are $26 and then it is usually $2-$4 a month in dues for the local club (depends on each individual club). Usually they have contests running, etc--makes losing weight fun! Just something to check out
|
I did weight watchers about 6 years ago.. I hated the meetings and weighting in. Basically as soon as they marked what I had lost I was out of there. This time around my mom is doing the meetings she really likes the. So I get to stay current on different topics ect via mom. I am just doing the program by myself and weighting myself every monday morning. I have lost 16 pounds already. So you can definately do it without the meetings.. You just have to keep your mind on the prize..
Nicole PS: Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels!! |
I just do ww online. I've never been to a meeting because I don't have the time and I think it costs too much. I love doing it online b/c i get all the tools and the resources and it tracks everything for me. The cost is much less (I think $21/month here in Canada).

My local Y is having a weight loss support group starting in Sept., and it meets during a time when the child watch is open so that's a possibility for me. I think it's $15 for 2 months, and it meets 30 minutes once a week. I think I'll check it out. I'm at the Y pretty much all the time as it is... ;)
|
u guys r lucky... i pay like 60 a month!
|
I too am considering changing to calorie counting to save some money. WW has helped, but honestly I haven't completely relied on them anyway. I've always been a diet renegade. I like sparkpeople and may go back to calorie counting with them. Points and calories aren't much different from what I can tell.
My WW account comes up for renewal soon, we'll see. |
It costs me £32 a month to go to WW, including buying WW snacks there, and the magazine once a month. Tbh, I think its a worthwhile investment, because it seems to be working for me.
Sure, I can write what I eat and weigh myself at home, but what I need, and what I get from WW meetings is the deadline and the accountability of someone else seeing my weight. The fact that I have to lose so much by Tuesday at 7pm means I get it done! Otherwise I would give myself a bit of leeway here and there and end up falling off the wagon. I know it's up to where you feel the need to budget, and I'm sure our lifestyles and budgets differ greatly, but I've bargained with myself that wherever I need to cut £s, cutting lbs is more important, so I'm counting that £32 as the priority in my budget. Losing this weight is one of the biggest priorities in my life (if not the biggest) so I'm sticking with it through thick and thin, even if it bankrupts me! |
You haven't really stopped WW just because you stopped the meetings. A physician I work with in the ED gave me a points book and showed me how to count points. I did more research and started WW august 2008, lost 78 pounds, then fell off the wagon may 2009. In about 6 weeks, I gained 18 pounds, my favorite jeans fit but I couldn't button them. End of July 2009 I was frustrated and irritated with myself, had a few breakdowns and then jumped back on the wagon. I have lost 13 of the 18 I gained and still doing good. Although I just finished rambling in another blog because I feel I could eat all the snacks in the house and I was by myself.....so my point is you can do the ww at home, it taught me portion control and how to eat right... hugs to you
