How do I use flaxseed

I bought flaxseed today actually whole ground flaxseed meal. My question is how much do i use and do I just sprinkle it on my food? Any info would be appreicated.

I put it in my cereal or add it to smoothies. It actually gives it a great flavor. If you are making breads you can add it to that too.

I think there is around 4 grams of fiber in 2 tablespoons, plus Omego 3's. If you like yogurt, you can sprinkle it on that, or onto a salad. I make my own whole wheat pizza crust and I add it to the dough mix in my bread machine. I think it has a nutty flavor, so I would think that you could use it any where that you would use nuts. Make sure you get plenty of water and you may want to start with an amount smaller than 2 Tbsp at first and gradually increase. Sometimes adding too much fiber at once is not a good thing!

I have read that it must be "broken" or mashed in some fashion, otherwise it doesn't digest. Is this true?

suitejudyblueeyes 02-18-2009 09:49 AM

I think that's true, TBG - That's why you usually use ground flaxseed. Whole flaxseeds can be used but you'd have to be very consciously trying to chew them up in order to get the same benefit - the stomach can't break down whole flax seeds.

Flax seed is great in granola and on oatmeal and in bread... I haven't gotten too creative with it but hope to figure out how to incorporate it more.

Don't forget to keep it in the fridge or freezer.

A good book on this is the Flax Cookbook by Elaine Magee which I borrowed from the library. Not just recipes but excellent information. :goodluck:

You can also use ground flax in lieu of eggs in recipes to save on cholesterol.
One egg = 1 tablespoon flax seed (ground) and 3 tablespoons water - whisk together until blended

I think I'm going to have to find some flax seed ground up.. How long does Flax seed stay good for? I just found these wraps that are 100calroies each with 8g of fiber.. whole wheat and have flax seed in them.. Not too bad... Haven't tried them yet thouh :)

Good thread though. Thanks! :carrot:

Yes, keep in fridge (ground or oil).

I sprinkle 1-2 T on lots of things but mainly oatmeal or yogurt. Some like it in salad, but I don't care for it with veggies.
