Help! Wls Pre-op
I hope that someone on here can help me, please. :bb:
I had my first appointment this month of a six-month preparation program leading up to the weight loss surgery which will be in November. This isn't the band, it's the other one. There was so much information given. :dizzy: She gave me this eating program: three meals a day and a pm snack. :yikes: One starch for breakfast and lunch, and two starches for dinner. Nothing in between except water. I am starving! :faint: :hungry: I just cannot stay on this frekin diet. If I could stay on a diet, I would not be going for wls. My next appt. is July 1. What should I do? :dunno:  I have no support as of yet. The hospital is one and one half hours away. I feel like just giving up. Any advice, suggesions, experience, anything will be so appreciated. :listen: Thank you. |
Is it your surgeon that has put you on this eating plan? I'm not sure why ... on some other weight loss boards dealing with gastric bypass surgery, folks were on a liquid diet 2 weeks before their surgery and others had to lose weight before they could have the surgery.:(
Some insurance companies have a requirement that you have attempted and failed to lose weight several times over the past five years. Could that maybe be what your surgeon is trying to do? I just had gastric bypass this past Monday and met with my surgeon on 04-11-06 for our first visit and was approved by my insurance company within 3 weeks even though I had never "officially" had medically supervised weight loss efforts with my primary care doctor. The only diet my surgeon had me on was full liquids the day before surgery ... that was hard enough! :) Good luck! Sorry I couldn't be more help! |
hmmm. how about sharing the rest of the program? i'm thinking that you might need MORE PROTEIN to hold you over from one meal to the next.
you can also try breaking up each meal into two smaller ones, but that only encourages grazing. so, we'll have to get a little creative and still stay within whatever the requirements are. |
Thank you jiffypop and startingoveragain for your reply.
Let me be a bit more specific. The physician's assistant told me that I need to lose 28 lbs. before surgery. She gave me this, i think it's a, diabetic eating plan. She told me three meals a day and a snack in the evening. One starch at breakfast and lunch and two starches for dinner. Increase fruits and vegetables. And 64 oz. of water. Also, to start walking. She said that my insurance is going to pay for the operation all except for a small fee fm. me. So, the insurance is no problem. I'm up to 6,742 steps today with the help of my chiropractor. The Physician's Asst. told me to start wearing a pedometer. This eating plan just keeps me so hungry that I have decided not to even follow it today. I don't know what to do. :dunno:  Jackie |
umm. are you eating ONLY one starch at breakfast and lunch and two at dinner and nothing else with it? i'm not sure if i understand what you're supposed to eat. most diabetic diets have protein plus veggies plus limited carbs.
that's great about the pedometer. they can be a BIG help in keeping track of how much you're moving! |
Good on the walking missmuffet! You don't have the "tool" yet to help you with your weight loss, so its frustrating. But you do have the support here! Jiffy's right, try to load up on the protein, it will make you feel fuller.
I was lucky, my surgeon did not require that I diet before surgery. He required us to walk 2 miles a day. His deal was it was more important to build muscle mass than to drop pounds on the scale at that point. The nurses would scare us and say that he could tell if we were cheating and not taking our walks because our muscle mass would not have increased on the scale. He actually has canceled surgeries if the muscle mass hasn't increased. I actually gained 2 pounds before surgery. But it was all muscle. I lost about 30 pounds of fat by walking before surgery. |
I received a high protien low carb diet from my nutritionist in January. I have lost 30 lbs so far even though I was only required to lose 20. The reason some surgeons want you to lose weight is because your liver size decreases dramatically for every 10 percent of your body weight that you lost making it easier to perform the surgery.
I am now waiting for my insurance approval so hopefully my surgery will be within the next few months. |
I'm back
Hi,
Thanks for your replies. I've given up, and now I'm back on this frekin' 3fatchicks web site. The eating plan that they gave me is one starch at breakfast and lunch along with other food. My next appt. is July 1 at the hospital. All that I've lost is 2 lbs. I think I'll try Atkins. Augh! Jackie |
Have you read Dr. Perricone's Weight Loss program? I really, really like it. This makes the most sense of anything I've encountered so far with more reasons than I can post here.
|
If you were eating properly you would not be hungry. Eat some protein and fat with the carbs. Fill up on veggies. I think you are experiencing Mind Hunger which means you aren't needing any more food, you just think you do. How much water do you drink? Read a good nutrition book so you'll know how to eat properly after you have lost the weight.

susan - congrats on your weight loss! i remember when you first joined 3fc, and you were struggling. but LOOK AT YOU NOW!!!!!
you've done a WONDERFUL job. |
Jackie:
I hear that you're frustrated. This is a tough thing to go through, especially the part where you know the surgery is coming, but you just have to wait a little longer. that must be awful! I myself only have little fantasy dreams of having the surgery. The options for me are not great, as i am a single mother, and would have to travel about 6-8 hours away from home to have it done, in another country even! But i sucessfully lost almost a hundred pounds between 2004 and 2005, so i guess i'll just keep plugging away. I will admit i'm a touch jealous of you though! ;) What i wanted to say to you is, your doctors know best. The truth of the matter is, once you have your surgery, your options food/intake wise will be DRASTICALLY reduced, and changed forever. You need to prove that you can handle these changes, by making changes now. Do you know what i mean? It's important to begin reducing your dependancy on food now, in preparation for the future. you have a countdown to look forward to, and i would think that might help you take that extra walk in the evening, or eat another few carrot sticks instead of potato chips. You can do this! Talk to your physicians office frequently if you have problems, they are there to help you. Good luck, and keep your head up! |
Saoirsee,
Thank you for your post. It's very touching. I smiled to myself when you said that you were a bit jealous of me. I'm a bit jealous of you and all the other losers on this site. Weight loss is a journey that begins with a single step. It is made up of the many steps that we take each day. I give up too easy. I thought that I wanted this surgery when, like you, it was not possible for me to have it. Now that I've been told that I can have it, I don't want it. Imagine having yourself permenantly fixed, running to the bathroom whenever you eat the wrong food. It's more unappealing to me every time I think about it. I'll still keep my appointment on July 1. Maybe they can help me get some control over my eating. But, as of today, I don't think that I will have the surgery. I'm on day two of the LA Weight Loss program. That helped me to lose thirty-five pounds in the past. Perhaps, it will help me lose more. Like you, I choose to trudge on each day with this journey. Congratulations on your weight loss, and best wishes for the future. Jackie |
oops, wrong thread! sorry
