Costs of WLS

Hey everyone! I'm Jamie and I'm new to the forum and am wondering how much typical wls cost? Well that is if you all don't mind sharing that info :) I know that some insurance does cover it but I know for a fact that mine doesn't. I haven't decided if I want wls yet...but it's something I'm looking into! Thank you in advance for all your help :)

I've not done much research on WLS, but I have found a few articles that may give you some idea of cost! (Although surely someone has far better information than I do!)

According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS), 16,200 weight loss procedures were performed in 1994. Ten years later, in 2004, an estimated 140,640 surgeries were projected to take place — that's more than an 800 percent increase! The average cost for surgery is now approximately $25,000. Due to this increase in procedures and cost, some insurance companies are making it more difficult for patients to obtain approval. These insurance companies don't view their policyholders as long-term responsibilities and figure their customers will switch carriers before they can recoup their investment.

This USA Today Link is just over a year old, but it gives last years prices for many of the "popular' WLS'

I hope that someone here can give you better information than what I've been able to!

Hi there!

My insurance didn't cover my WLS at all. I'm scheduled to have surgery in Mexico May 12th. I've done all the research and have follow up arranged here in Houston. In Houston, the going rate for self pay is 15K. I'm going to a doctor with more experience and who trains the American docs and paying about 9K. Just my 2 cents....

Thanks for the info :)

Some insurances will pay, some won't. In the US, lapband can cost anywhere up to $50k. It really depends on where you go. They do have WL surgery centers that i'm sure will cost less than a regular hospital but don't quote me on that.

Hugs and nice to meet you.
