Wls Shopping List

  • Can you tell me what kind of appliances you are using to
PUREE your food? I was thinking that meat might be hard to puree.

Also how many grams of protein is the average after WLS is it about 60 grams a day?

    Thanks,

    Pookie

P.S. For the past week I have been successful on my diet to lose weight in preparation for surgery, but I still have a long way to go.

I wanted to go out and buy an appliance to puree food but not sure what kind to get. Also going to buy Baby spoons and small plate.

Anything else I should be adding to my WLS SHOPPING LIST?
  • Hey Pookie!

I just use a saucer. I still use the baby spoons. I found that a hand held mixer was invaluable. I use it to mix my protein shakes. Do you have a mini chopper? I just chewed things to bits, but a chopper would have been handy. Sugar free pudding, chicken broth, some good pecorino romano cheese to sprinkle in it made me very happy too. hmmm....what else? Sugar free ice pops, crystal lite. Don't buy too much "stuff" cause alot of people report that their tastes change. I'm sure others will have some suggestions for you.

I owe you a pm...hopefully I will get to it tomorrow.

ps...I just re read your post. Jiff was told to do 100 grams of protein, I was told 70. I think it depends on your start weight and your goal weight.
  • Pookie,
I work in a nursing home kitchen, We use a food processor. The mini chopper (processor) around $10.00 is great for single servings. Just add a few drops of water, broth or gravy
  • hey pookie 88

glad to hear from you i think of you often congratulations on you sucess remember baby steps

when i was able to eat chicken i just tore it up with fork and chopped into small pieces i can not eat puree
baby spoons are a must but my daughter has to keep reminding me do not overload the spoon remember i am a fast eater and that is really a nono lol

another helpful thing is the hosp let me have a few of the cups i drank my drinks it use this as a measure of drink. about a week later a friend from a resturant gave me cups that they serve nacho cheese in it is 2 oz and that is my fine china putting food in a saucer is not letting me know what 2 oz is and i overeat and i had problems with it coming back to visit me.

also to let you know today i am on the record for getting under 300 lbs down 68lbs. went shopping yesterday i was able to buy 2 outfits for under 50.00 it was on sale and it was a size 2x down from 5x i don't know what made me happier the sale or the size lol
they tell me we will be skipping sizes so i don't want to do a whole wardrobe and in a month have to throw those out. i remember have in my closet clothes that i will fit again until i was in 5 x and went thru closet and threw out the 10 different sizes
b/c i thought there was no going back. GOD is good and he has made a way for us and the good thing we can and will keep it off
i am praying this is the last weight loss attemp b/c it will work

thanks for letting me get that off my chest

    later

  • Thanks for your replies
Thanks for your replies -- I appreciate the support on these boards

I am trying to keep notes on all the information I have received on these boards. There is so much RESEARCH to do on this surgery and what to do afterwards. I have read BOOKS and magazine ARTICLES and have gone to so many websites including www.obesityhelp.com.

Plus all the invaluable information from these 3 chicks boards and Personal Messages (PM) from the supportive people on these boards.

I still have a lot to learn (like how much water to drink after operaion), but I am getting there with your help.

P.S. 10 days and counting that I am sticking to a strict diet in preparation for my future surgery. Every time I think of quiting I just say one word to myself INCISION!
So far that seems to be working. Even though it is tempting I don't weight myself every day, I don't want to drive myself crazy with the scale.

Please be careful of the message boards at obesityhelp. They only allow positive messages to hit the boards. So its not all its cracked up to be, its not all a happy ending.

I myself am planning on having this surgery next year...and go to that site for support and information.

Good Luck and best wishes to you!!
  • Thanks & Anne Rice
    Thanks for your replies.

I saw Anne Rice on the NBC TODAY show Wed morning and she has lost 95 lbs since her surgery in Jan 2003.

I read an articles that says her health has greatly improved since her surgery.

Anne Rice is also supposed to be on "The View" This Friday Oct 31. I hope they will discuss the surgery and not just her new book.

Thanks again for all the info and support!

  • I've never pureed my food, my surgeon suggests that you chew your food 30 times and then count to 30 between bites. By the time your done counting and chewing your so bored with eating and counting you realize that your full and don't want anymore. It makes your eat slower and by the time you reach 30 bites your food is very small if not already pureed. It works for me!!! Good luck with your surgery!!!!
  • I understand that obesityhelp.com also publishes the Memorial Section where you can read the journals of those who died. So in that way you get the other side.

Here in the Boston area, one hospital has ceased the lap rny due to a patient dying when a stapler misfired and the seam didn't secure. Don't know if other hospitals followed suit until the cause is determined. They still do the open kind.

I have been researching wls for nearly 3 years, going to a support group for the last 11 months. I want to see the long range effects of surgery on the people in the group before I decide for myself. In the process, I have continued to lose on Atkins, coming down 111 lbs since Jan 2001. I still have 105 lbs to go and therefore still eligible. The hospital support group told me I am welcome to come to their meetings whether I decide to have surgery or not.
  • marishka.. no matter how you're doing it, you're doing a great job!!!!

Have i mentioned recently about using sanitary pads for drainage after the surgery? works better than the gauze. yes, it sounds gross, but it works!!!!
