Had my consult on Friday with surgeon

I had my consult with my surgeon in nyc on Friday. The surgeon seems very smart and took the time to answer all my questions.
I think I would have started the ball rolling on Friday, but I asked for more time to try to lose some weight before the procedure. If it was just the bypass I would have gone ahead, but I also have an extremely large hernia to be taken care of and I am hoping if I lose some more weight (just one last time) it will make the surgery easier.

I have lost so many lbs in my life (only to gain them back and more). I hope I can do it just one more time.

I know this is not to be taken lightly, but I have been so extremely heavy for over 20 yrs and it is taking a big toll on my health now also. --Pookie88

sounds like you're off to a good start, pookie... what was your doc's reaction to your request???

POOKIE88 10-20-2003 02:35 AM

He agreed

Hi JiffyPop

He agreed with me. I think if it was just the gastric bypass he would have said to go ahead now because he said he has done that operation on people as heavy as 750 pounds.

But because the hernia will require a much larger incision, he agreed it would be easier on me if I lost some weight before the operation.

Lately it is getting harder & harder for me to lose so it will be a difficult job but I am thinking I will try protein shakes etc to try to lose weight now.

Does anyone have advice for how to lose weight quickly before surgery? Hopefully this will be the last time that I have to struggle so hard to lose weight.

Thanks -Pookie88

Dear JiffyPop

Hi JiffyPop

I just noticed that on your previous post it looks like you lost 100 lbs in about 5 months. How did you do it? I see it says 800 calorie diet. Was that some kind of liquid diet or shake diet?

Thanks,
Pookie:^:

pookie... the REAL answer was that my sleep apnea was finally corrected and, as one doc put it, i finally had some oxygen in my system and finally had a metabolism!!

the 800 calorie diet was real food. just not much of it. about 50 grams of protein and vegs. very little fat.

how much are you trying to lose and in what time frame? some docs might support your effort by putting you on something like optifast, if it's just for a short time...

hi pookie

just thought i let you know the dietian put me on 900 calories liquid and 350 food calories

so i did my protein drinks mixed with their friut drink and pudding and for food i would eat those prepared portion controled frozen dinners i lost 37 lbs in one month

i do not know how much you are trying to lose good luck and i think you made the right decision to take care of trying to shrink
the surgery will go much better

it was good to hear from you

Thanks

Thanks to JiffyPop and BevMel for your replies.

I don't have a certain number of lbs in mind, I just want to try to lose as much as possible in the next couple of months.

Yesterday I just had the protein shakes and nothing else and I did lose but it was very hard with just the shakes. I had a headache etc, but maybe that eases up after a few days.

I was thinking I would do the shakes and add a little very lean protein just to have a little something solid. Maybe Egg Beaters for breakfast and some very lean protein for dinner.

Thanks,
Pookie

Hi Pookie,
It has been a long time since I've visited this site but became nostalgic and decided to see how my old friends at the low carb site were faring. Low and behold, they all moved here. Hello old friends; don't expect you to remember me but I remember you.
Pookie, just thought I'd suggest a program that seems to be working well for some. It should, you get such few calories, I imagine it will be good preparation for post op. In any event, they have the entire program listed on their site and a forum that struggles to become cohesive. There was a very active chat room there too, when people first heard of the program, but now it dropped off considerably. It is Sadkhin.com. You can also find it under The Sadkhin Complex
Best wishes to you,
ST
