what do you drink?

coffee, herbal tea, soda, juice?

I'm not a soda, juice drinker but I do love herbal tea, please tell me I won't have to stop drinking that?

Hey PR!

It is good that you are not a soda or juice drinker 'cause as a post op you shouldn't drink them. Juice has too much sugar and may make you dump. In fact I have come to the conclusion that my post op hospital heart problems were a direct result of having been given juice (and lots of it) in the hospital. Soda will stretch out your pouch. Put a bit of soda in one of those little snack baggies and shake it up and see what happens...that's what it will do to your new tiny tummy. You may drink it flat...but what is the point?

I drink water and crystal lite.

Don't worry about your herbal tea...you can have as much as you want!

decaf coffee... crystallight or other brand of SFwater flavoring. even kool aid is fine if you use sweetner instead of sugar in it.

herb tea is great. fruit2O.

anything that doesn't have bubbles or calories is just fine. and you have to sort of limit the caffeine or you will retain water big time.

Cool, I can have my herbal tea :)

I pretty much drink water water water. I am having a bit of a time with the sf jello. I'm kinda like one of those goofy people that don't believe in aspartme, nutrasweet, sweetnlow. I guess it doesn't help that my good friend's hubby is a biochemist and did a study on that and a few other things....
Another one was on pigs and well let's just say I no longer have pork on my list of foods I eat and yes that includes ham, bacon, sausage. I will eat it if we are at someone else's home but I don't buy it .

Now lets be serious, your body has ways of expelling gases... To be quite honest, it has been said that foods and beverages with easily derived gases (eg soda) actually produce less gas within the body, and help to expell other gases already in the body. Foods w/ harder to derive gases (eg beans, veggies) are the ones that cause gas problems. This is true. That is why you burp once or twice after a soda, and you are okay. After red beans and rice, you can be in some serious pain... just thought you would like to know...

Dear conway...I was being serious. the information I gave pr was given to me by the nurse who runs the wls support group and who had the surgery herself.

at what point of the wls process are you?

ps thanks for the info on gas

jiffypop 10-10-2003 03:08 PM

thanks for stopping by, conway. those of us who've had wls have reconstructed insides. we do not have normal stomachs nor do we have a normal digestion process. therefore, things that work for non-surgeried people may not work for us, or may actually be downright dangerous. like soda.

but there is no truth to the rumor that someone's pouch actually exploded from soda. but it IS true that the gas gets trapped in our pouches and can be very painful. gas also gets trapped when we eat too much too quickly [the infamous AIR BUBBLE!] and we can throw up from swallowing too much air.
