oh boy!!! this should be a fun thread!!! purple... if you don't mind, let's just wait and see what kinds of answers you get...

To new to answer. So far it is Buttermilk. Tomato juice (virgin mary) I know this is not protien but I like it and I consider it fluid. once in a while I have a saltine cracker.

I can't wait to see what else there is too.

I'm 3 months post op and I try to stick to SF and FF snacks. I'll have SF popcycles, SF pudding, pretzels (not the best choice I know), sometimes some nuts or cheese. At work I'll have some cottage cheese and fruit or crackers. That's been about it so far. I try hard not to snack and would rather get up and do something. It burns off the urdge to snack and burns calories instead.

i am far away from snacks but one lady at dr's office told us of
a protein bar called detour she said it taste like a snickers

i did try it before surgery to test it and i must say it sure is tasty

The detour bars are very good but please becareful with them, while they have 30 grams of protein, they also have 310 calories, 25 carbs, and 12 grams of sugar. They're not the best choice but its better then candy or cookies.

I do beef jerky and nuts when I just need something salty. As for sweet I eat the no sugar added Fudgsicles, I can only do one of the 2 in the little pack at a time if not it makes me sick.

I have pork rinds and an Atkins bar on my desk right now. Way to much fat for most of you, but unfortunally I am a carb queen so I'm just trying to stay away from the carbs!

I really need to get some water, have NOT had any so far today!

my turn!!!!

and this will be fairly long.

first, let's separate 'wanting to munch and crunch on something' from 'i'm hungry.' the first is an emotional craving that we can no longer give into without problems.

the second one we get to feed!!!

SO lesson number one: eat either on schedule or when you're hungry.

lesson two, which might even be more important than lesson one: most people less than 9 months since surgery don't feel hunger. the first sign that they need to eat is that they're ready to pass out, dizzy, or cold, or some other physical reaction.

snacks - those things we eat to either maintain a schedule or because we're genuinely hungry - need to be protein based.

atkins indulgence bars don't count. they have no protein. for the first 6 months, in fact, even low carb protein bars aren't a good idea because they're too hard on the newly surgeried tummy. not that you'll die from it, but you may be very very uncomfortable.

for the first 3 months, you're basically strugging to eat your protein. it gets easier after that. some people do well eating three meals a day, with 20 or so grams of protein, others need 3 meals and one or two snacks. i needed to eat about 15 grams of protein every 3 hours. not sure how often i ate at that point, but it was sure more than 5 times a day! and i count protein shakes as eating.

whatever works.

here are some protein snack ideas: cottage cheese, hard boiled egg, some cheese, jerky, sliced cold cuts [ham, turkey, chicken, roast beef cut very very thin] and rolled with bits of cheese, a little peanut butter, soy pretzels, yogurt if you don't dump on it, hummus with cut up veggies, soy nuts, genisoy chips.

however you handle your food, just be really careful not to eat out of boredom, anger, frustration, stress, anything except hunger or needing fuel.

we were told by the food **** dietician to keep snacks to under 250 calories. if a snack had 325 calories or more, we had to consider it a meal

jiffypop 10-05-2003 10:18 PM

and one more thing... if you're less than 9 months out of surgery and you're getting hungry, you probably aren't eating enough protein. and if you can't tell someone how much protein you've had, then you'[re not eating enough.

and a note to bevmel: hon... grits are not protein. you shouldn't be eating them right now.

now, why do we need the protein? to maintain our body's workings while we're eating less than 500 calories., we can take vitamin supplements for most other stuff, but not for protein. therefore, that's what we have to eat as a priority. it keeps our blood going, our hearts beating, our immune systems going, skin, teeth, hair.

and not the least of which is maintaining muscle, one of the major aids in losing weight. low protein equals less muscle. less muscle means fewer calories burned. fewer calories burned means less weight loss.

we didn't go through ALL THIS to not take advantage of the surgery.

apologies for being such a nag. but this is important.

just like water is..

grammyX5 10-06-2003 08:04 AM

Jiff so well said. that is why you have had the success that you had and will continue to keep being successful.

to all of the rest of us and this includes me. read the last two post by jif and read them again then memorize them. They are so important.

now that I have said all of that I can get off of the soap box. Grammy
