Cool JessLess Sleeve Gastrectomy Thread

I haven't posted in a long time but I remember this site helping me when I was losing weight last time. I lost 80 lbs. on Phentermine, stopped taking it, lapsed back into my old eating habits and not much exercise, and of course, gained most of it back.

In the meantime, I developed debilitating lower back pain I have been struggling with for over two years. I have tried everything like PT at multiple places, an egg crate bed topper, yoga, working out with a personal trainer to strengthen my core, meditation, a cocktail of Tramadol, Diclofen, and Cyclobenzaprine, massage for pain relief, facet block shots, dry needling, I got a standing desk, ice packs, Salonapas patches, and a lot more. I've spent thousands of dollars living in near constant pain. As part of trying to heal, I went to a new physician in addition to the specialists I was seeing. I told her my main concerns were my back pain and my weight.

She recommended a Sleeve Gastrectomy, but I wasn't ready yet. I continued trying to treat my back pain without realizing that the extra weight I was carrying, largely in my stomach was most likely contributing to my pain from lumbar spine degenerative disc disease.

Now that I have read many studies about back pain and being obese, I have decided to try to kill two birds with one stone and get a Sleeve Gastrectomy to both help manage my weight and ease my back pain. I'm going through the process of meeting the team at the hospital I picked, getting insurance authorization, etc. I'm scared, but also excited.

I plan to blog about the experience here.

I have my first informational meeting at the hospital tomorrow. So far I have downloaded the BARIATASTIC App, matched it to my Apple Watch, and tracked some food and water. I also set my goal weight at 150, which would be 100 lbs. lost. I am happy to change that if it doesn't seem right to the doctors or to me later.

Hi JessLess. Welcome back to 3 FatChicks. I'm sorry to hear of all the pain issues you have been going through. I hope the bariatric surgery helps you. It has helped many, as long as you eat a healthy diet to support it. It will be interesting to follow along with your progress.

Thanks very much, BerkshireGrl! I have my first major appointment this week to see if I am a good candidate for the surgery. I've been tracking on the Baritastic app, which I really like, for the past week and have already lost 4 lbs.

Well, a lot has happened! I just had my stomach imaged and that went fine. I've cut way back on coffee and am off BC pills because my surgery could be in Oct.! Just waiting for insurance approval to set a date.

I'm moving over to bariatricpal.com due to lack of traffic here. Same name. Good luck, everyone!

Wannabehealthy and BerkshireGrl, I just came back to check this thread. I'm 3 weeks past my VGS, back at work, eating a blended diet, and I've lost 25 lbs and am doing great! Hope you are doing well.
