BMI too high for gastric balloon?
 

Hi everyone,

I reached out to a local weight loss surgery office to ask about the balloon. I was disappointed because they said my BMI was too high for the balloon, that I would require a regular surgery. The reason I am not wanting to do that is because I am high risk because of an immune system disease.

Has anyone ever heard of the BMI issue with the balloon? I am not sure if it is just the one office. BMI is 60, they said it needs to be below 50.

Not 100% sure but I think it is only FDA approved for <50 so maybe they don't want to use it off label and risk a lawsuit if something happens?

Also, can only have balloon in for 6 months. Maybe greater bmi is not allowed b/c they think not enough weight will be lost in 6 months to make it worthwhile to have or require surgical method for continued weight loss?
