Aloha! This is my first post of this forum and yours caught my eye. I had open RNY in April 2009. Although my last surgery was a revision from an old VBG, I've had 2 WLS done open. Yes, it's a little harder to bounce back, but don't let it scare you. I'm glad I had mine open because they found a tumor on my liver that may have been overlooked if it was done lap. I have a cool scar and love to tell people about my surgery...
How long were you out of work/school? I had a pretty complicated surgery and went back to work part time (computers) at 3 weeks but probably should have waited until at least 4. How long did the incision pain last? I had about 50 staples to close me up :-) The incision pain was barely there after about day 3. Yes, it hurt to move too much and it's hard to get up and down but it's a small price to pay for your "freedom." It was mostly fatigue for a few weeks. How long did the dr say to refrain from sex? I don't think I even asked. How much weight did you lose at 3, 6, 9, 12 months? I'm not sure how much I lost at these intervals. You can't compare yourself to anyone...but I lost about 120 in the first 12 mo. I've lost 148 total. In case it matters, I'm 19 and weigh 360lbs (god it sickens me to say that) - ah, it's just a number. Just don't let it creep up just because you are having surgery :-) Hope it helps...
