  • I need to get hernia surgery very soon I am very sick because of it but the Dr wants me to lose as much weight as possible. I'm also going to have the Weight loss surgery but most likely hernia first.
Is there a protein powder people seem to like better than others. I seem to find a lot of gross ones.
I'm supposed to do mostly shakes and need to find a way to get through this.
    Thanks for any help.
  • I really like Jay Robb brand - I find it at Whole Foods around here.

I also like to get unflavored protein and add my own sugar free flavorings (like sf Torani or Davinci syrups).

Also, I use Hood Calorie Countdown milk instead of regular milk when I make my shakes because it only has 45 calories and 3g carbs per cup, compared to 90 calories and 12g carbs in regular skim milk.
  • I like the Biggest Loser Whey Protein.. it is awesome after a workout and the blueberry tastes so good!
  • Jill~
does the unflavored one really not have any flavor to it?
The Davinci syrups taste good too!
    mgf~
  • I'm a nectar protein fan.

good luck, darlin! some docs do the hernia repair at the same time they do the RNY. but there are times that this is a bad idea - so talk with your surgeon.

For me, my shakes taste like whatever flavors I add. Others have complained that they can't get past the smell of the unflavored protein, but I just don't sniff it, and I always drink it through a straw so my nose doesn't get very close to it. I have heard others complain that the unflavored protein is gross, but I'm not trying to mix it into soup or yogurt or anything - I ONLY use it to make shakes.
  • I love Nectar.

I hear body fortress is inexpensive and available at walmart and very good too. but i have not tried it.

if you are doing VLC and protein you should also take supplements like vitamins and calcium
  • Thanks very much. I'll look into those brands. Nessa I'm taking vitamins. Right now the biggest thing is I feel like my blood sugar is always low. I don't have diabetes but I run hypoglycemic. So I'm struggling with that.
  • fish is a FABULOUS source of high-quality protein, and eating it could make you feel full longer. of course, ya gotta find one that you like.

other protein sources include chicken breast and turkey and all that other stuff, but you knew that.

i'm only adding this in because there are other, less expensive ways than protein drinks to get the low-carb/high protein diet that you want. of course, as with everything, ya gotta like what your eating!!!!

I know right now, you're prepping for your hernia surgery, but are you heading for RNY as your WLS? Please talk to your surgeon and do some research - I am concerned because RNY actually causes or worsens hypoglycemia in many RNY patients, even those who never had hypoglycemia prior to their surgery. Bypass of the pyloric valve causes food to hit the intestines faster, which can result in reactive hypoglycemia. This trend is being noticed more and more in RNY patients - Johns Hopkins is even considering starting a study on hypoglycemia in post-WLS patients.
  • I'm still thinking about wls I'm just not sure so I'm going along with losing weight for the hernia. Then I'm going to decide. But I'll keep they hypo being worse in mind. I know I don't need it being worse.
I really want lapband but the surgeons I have talked to feel I need something more.
  • I like Isopure The vanilla (to me) smells like pudding
On a side note I think I'm getting more hypoglycemic going to the doc on the 9th!
  • Man KO, hypoglycemia is the pits!!! Be careful. I've gone down making the bed a couple of times with hypogly; face plant on the mattress! It is weird, but when I was younger, I had problems with hypoglycemia. Then a few years before my surgery, I was hyperglycemic. Now I'm back to hypoglycemic. I don't think I'm as bad as I was after surgery, but if I don't eat small every few hours, I weird out!
  • Nan - weird out??? how do you know???
  • Jiff The 4th voice starts talking to her
I know when I have a head chat with more than 3 ppl i'm in trouble!!
