Questions about mirlax

My husband is having his surgery on wedensday and his doctor has told him to take mirlax mixed with gatoraide to clean out his system. I am figuring that is protocal for surgery for everyone. Does anyone know how long it takes to take effect and how long the effects last for?

Thanks in advance for your help

I did not have to take any kind of laxative pre-surgery. The only thing I had to do was stop eating and drinking as of 6pm the evening before and take a Zantac 150 the night before and the morning of surgery with a small amount of water to swallow the pill.

It all depends on what kind of surgery he is having. I'm in my last year in a nursing program I have never heard of it being used before surgery to clean out someones GI tract, but then again I have only spent a day or two in an OR observing. Basically it's a laxative that at one time was by prescription only but within the last year or two has become available to the general public. I tried to post a website but because I don't have enough posts i can't. Try googling miralax. there are a ton of websites that can tell you what it does. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

mirlax?

He is having gastic bypass(RNY-i think that is what it is)- i will check out the mirlax web site. he was actually told to get either mirlax or whatever insurence would cover that was cheaper-so he got the behind the counter stuff-whatever the real name is i am not sure but i know it is equal to mirlax.
Thanks for you help

I am familar with Miralax, it works well for what it was intended. When I had my RNY, they had me use the sodium based liquid...works quickly and effectively. You can get it over the counter but my insurance covered the prescription version.

One warning though...tastes Horrid, Nasty, Sickening, Revolting....you get the idea!

I use Miralax and the one that I have has NO taste....No grit....and it does the job well. My Dr. told me to use it for constipation. I don't know about the other Miralax that the other poster spoke about but like I said the one that I have it just the regular ol' Miralax that you measure in the cap and mix with whatever type of liquid you want. It's really not bad....:D

amount

The amount that he has to take is HUGE. I want to say 255 mgs-it is the size of the medium bottle of over the counter mirlax. he has to mix it with 64 oz of gatoraide and start it 10am this morning and finish by 2pm.
I told him he will probely lose 10 pounds in just today-poor guy:(
I think he just wants to know is i should move the tv in to the bathroom for the day lol-no seriously-he just wants to know when it starts to take effect (right away or will it take an hour or two)and how long it last-(all day and nite)?

We are home for the day-well at least he is-me for most of it-just got to tie up lose ends before he goes in tommorrow..

thanks for your support
take care
and have good day

i had to drink the fleet's stuff - YUCK YUCK YUCK!!!!!! it was on the shelf, too. a few oz mixed in water - sounds like your hubby's doc is going for the same amount of the active ingredient, and that means a larger volume if you're using Miralax.

it should work within a couple of hours - and might keep on working for awhile, if ya know what i mean!
