about OTHER people

  • you know what i'm talking about - the ones who say things like: eat this! it's healthier than that steak you're eating. Don't eat THAT [the, say, two tablespoons of gravy that you're using to moisten the meat that you KNOW ya gotta eat!]

Over the weekend, i was talking to a lovely lady whose surgery is scheduled for June. She's sooo excited about it, and her daughter is excited for her, and wants to help. and that's all WONDERFUL. but here's the deal - the daughter seems to have put herself in charge of mom's post-surgica eating already!

this lady is one of those 'sample ladies' at the grocery store. and she was serving boca burgers. now, don't get me wrong - i LOVE boca burgers - add cheese, and we're good to go. BOOST THE PROTEIN, folks - and watch the portion size - they may have TOO MANY CARBS for those of you newly post-op to tolerate. but if you add cheese, eat half of it, you should be OK.

    anyway - i'm digressing.

I told the nice lady that they were good, but to add cheese because they don't have enough protein. and the daughter started - 'these have no fat, don't go adding the cheese, you don't need it, blah blah blah.'

well, bottom line - our protein needs outweigh the fat content of MOST protein sources [you'll NEVER hear me say that bacon, for example, is the best protein source[. in general, with the small amounts that we eat, especially pre-op, protein is the way to go!

soooooo, the lesson i'm seeing in this is to MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO DO, and don't let yourself get distracted by other people's diets or opinions of what's healthy and what's not.

and it's REALLY important that those who are close to us KNOW what our own rules are - it's not going to be the same as theirs, and they need to respect that.

BTW, that nice lady has PROMISED to show up here - and i REALLY hope she does. she's a SWEETHEART!!!!!

    OK rant over -
  • To bad you couldn't tell the daughter to educate herself before she starts dictating to her mother. GROWL !!!!

Hang in there Jiffy... I know that had to be so frustrating.

  • LOL! i was more amused than anything else. but i'm going to reinforce this with the MOM. she's a sweetie. and the daughter is beautiful, kind, well-intentioned, but, hey! that's life!
  • Yes
Daughter needs to educate herself before she starts talking. PROTIEN PROTIEN! Big big big.
  • at a month post op, last week I went to Florida to stay with my in-laws in their timeshare. They have been very supportive of the surgeries (hubby has his next week) but my British MIL, who likes to think she knows everything, really doesn't. She went to the store and bought me yogurt (I had already shopped for myself, btw) that had 28 grams of sugar per serving! My husband had to explain to her that the sugar content was too high. Then MIL wanted Krispie Kreme donuts (they are very expensive in England so they don't buy them there and she said, "You could have half of one if you are careful." Hello?? I explained to her that was not a good idea for me at all.

Sometimes we have to be the most careful of those so well intentioned!
  • LOOK AT YOU. Kim - you['re doing so wonderfully.
